okay, this question is totally random, but i think it would have some interesting responses. due to catherine zeta jones' popular, and academy award winning, portrayal of velma kelly in the movie Chicago, it is obvious that she is talented in all three areas of musical theatre. if you had to put her in a role on broadway right NOW, what show and what role would you put her in?
Well, I think the most obvious one is as Velma Kelly in Chicago.
She has a deeper voice when she sings. But, here are some roles I wouldn't mind seeing her in:
Ulla in the Producers
Velma Von Tussle in Hairspray
Sally Bowles in Cabaret (yet, is closed, but she wouldn't have been bad, if they ever do an updated movie, she should be Sally)
I second all of Millie's suggestions. I would add the Witch from Into The Woods, if they ever do another revival. She could have replaced Vanessa L. Williams. She would have been great. The show would have run longer then.

Wow, she would have been a wonderful Witch. I can see that very well now that you mentioned it. I *hated* Vannessa Williams. Yuck. Catherine Zeta-Jones would be a really good Lucy in Jekyll and Hyde too, at least I think so...
yeah Lucy would be good insofar as the physicalities, but she couldn't handle it vocally. especially not 8 shows a week. but we all know lots of performers have played roles they can't sing!!
I second Sally Bowles. I think she would be incredible in that! I'd love to hear her sing "Mein Herr".

What's interesting about her is that you read good reviews of her when she's playing a bitch. Although for say, her role in "The Terminal", I read reviews saying she was miscast, that you just don't like her in a role where she's supposed to be a liked character, and that she's best playing a bitch because you want to dislike her.
She plays the bitch quite well. I did not see the Terminal, therefore I can't comment on it.
I think she would be a horrible VON TUSSLE or ULLA.
i don't think anything on Broadway suits her.

I LOVE YOU FOR ASKING THIS QUESTION (as I am ridiculously obsessed wtih CZJ, check out the Catherine thread of the offtopic board).
I think she would make an AMAZING Sally Bowles in Cabaret, first and foremost. Too bad it closed.
She'd make a fantastic Lucy in Jekyll and Hyde.
And she'd make a great Lucy Brown in the Threepenny Opera.

I think that she can be in the ensemble of anything, 2nd row to the back.
I don't think that she's all that good for any role on Broadway currently.
Actually, I can see her singing "Miss Baltimore Crabs" but out of the three choices I put, she would best play Sally Bowles in Cabaret. If they ever make another movie, they should not hesitate to cast her if she has interest in it.
Another thing, she did play Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street in the West End years ago; I think she was under 20 at the time. You don't see a lot of celebrities known more for movies who can sing, dance, or act in a Broadway show well - Catherine is an exception.

The female lead in Kiss of the Spider Woman (sorry, don't remember the character's name - played by Chita Rivera and later Vanessa Williams).
I think Catherine Zeta-Jones is an ideal Ebb-Kander girl.

She's like Sharon Stone. I love to see her play a bitch, but she's just not believable playing a nice person...wonder why...

I agree with Blue Wizard. Aurora in Kiss of the Spider Woman
Now can you ever see her as Mama Rose in Gypsy? I believe she said that's a role she really wants to play sometime down the road...
Hmmm...maybe. Of course, she is no Bernadette Peters! But I could definitely see her as Mama Rose.
The hot woman as my icon could be in KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN. I would do things that I would never dream of if she was seducing me. Grrrrrrrrrowl!!!!
