Where do you live, phantom? I'm glad that your friends had positive reactions to movie musical trailers. re: Rank the movie musicals of the past decade...

Where I live in NC, people had laughed at the trailers to Rent, Sweeney Todd, Hairspray, Mamma Mia, and even Dreamgirls. re: Rank the movie musicals of the past decade...

Little-by-little, however, each of these films (the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL franchise, and GLEE) are helping the genre to be more accepted in society. I really hope that we continue to move toward the time when movie musicals were the most anticipated films, were made regularly, and were nominated for Academy Awards (although a lot of recent movie musicals were!!).

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I loved the Phantom movie. I thought it was visually stunningt and done well. Yes the singing was the greatest but it wasn't the worst imo.

Hey Capnhook, I live in Pennsylvania, right outside of Philadelphia. The arts scene around here is pretty kickin', so I think movie musicals perform pretty decently here. But don't quote me on that. :) When I have been in the movie theater for a musical, the audience reaction was usually pretty positive. The only time I sensed confusion or resistance was at Dreamgirls, and it seemed the audience I saw it with was new to musicals. Plus, there WERE a few awkward transitions into singing in the middle of Dreamgirls, as much as I loved the movie.
I remember seeing Evita in 1996 (I was in high school) and people being SHOCKED and TERRIFIED that there was singing. But, since then I have seen films like Sweeney Todd and Hairspray with full audiences that had a very positive reaction. So you are right, I think they are catching on more.
What bothers me is people who hate movie musicals have no problem watching music videos on MTV or whatever... yet music videos are like mini musicals.
PS--NC is a fun place. I love the Chapel Hill area.

Phantom and the Producers are neck and neck my least favorite of this list, however, Phantom had amazing cinematography, and the Producers had practically none, so Phantom leaps ahead.

I didn't see all of them, but from those that I did see, here's my list:

HEDWIG
PRODUCERS
DREAMGIRLS
CHICAGO
PHANTOM
SWEENEY TODD

The ones I didn't like were all so bad that I have to say they are all tied for worst. They are, in no specific order since I disliked them all equally:

MAMMA MIA, MOULIN ROUGE, RENT, HAIRSPRAY
