I also saw Sondheim at the closing performance of Sweeney. He was three seats down from me (on the aisle). He leaned against one of the back pillars of the Eugene O'Neill, and most people knew who he was. When he walked in people started whispering, screaming, taking pictures, a few were even crying. Nobody really approached him from what I can remember. After the show, he quickly got up and I was able to shake his hand and say "Thank You". Soon after that I lost him in the crowd.
Amazing.
That's exciting that Sondheim was there, and I'm sure he elicits some pretty crazy reactions. Maybe he'll be around even more as the show nears the end.

Yeah, the highlight of my theatergoing career was meeting Sondheim and getting a pat on the back at the final Sweeney. He didn't want attention drawn to himself, hence his autograph denial...but a pat on the back and a handshake was just fine for me.

I saw him as well after the first preview of Sweeney Todd. All I could do was just grin at him standing in public on the sidewalk like everybody else and yet not being swarmed or approached by a single person. He just stood there beaming and seemed quite satisfied with the audience reaction and the production itself. If I only have one memory of him in person, I couldn't ask for a better one.
Yeah I was there last night and I was too star struck to actually go up to him but I did attempt to get a pic of him from afar.

Yeah, Jenna, I am going to the last performance. Maybe he will be there then. I'm surprised that he's able to sit like, in the orchestra and not have people swarm him. But maybe he's gotten good at being stealthy about it after all these years
During the run of the Dustin Hoffman revival of "Death of a Salesman," Arthur Miller was there and he signed the copy of the play I was carrying with me.
That reminds me of when I met Edward Albee and had him sign my copy of "The Goat". Too cool.
Do you mean that people actually wait outside until midnight?/i>
Don't judge Deet! I waited 'til 12:30 to meet Donna Murphy because she was trying on Drama Desk dresses. I felt mucho awkward if that makes it at all better...

lol! wait, where did you wait for her? she was trying on dresses backstage?
I never laugh at people like you, I admire your perseverance.
I have found that people tend to give Sondheim his own space so he doesn't get "swarmed" as actors do. According to all his biographers, he was/is shy and I don't think people want to disturb him. But I also understand that as he has gotten older he is becoming more approachable, so maybe he doesn't give off the same "I want to be alone" vibes that he apparently used to.

Yeah, everyone who has seen him says that people do generally leave him alone. I wonder what the lucky winner talked about last night with him over cocktails in Raul's dressing room.
I didnt see that on the ebay auction, I wonder how much it went for
talk about making me jealous! I have no idea what I would talk about!
I'm not jealous either.

lol keen. I'm not so much jealous of that than I am that I had to leave before SS came out.
OMG, I remember that girl at Sweeney Todd - the one who burst out hysterically crying the moment she saw him.

woah..
My wife got to have an extended chat with Raul at an ASTEP fundraiser not long ago. VERY nice guy, easy to talk to. He even sang a few notes from "See Her Smile" (from Tick... Tick... Boom!) for her - she loved it. What a nice guy!
Ken
as insanely excited as i was, the fact that sondheim was sitting right behind me at the last performance of "sweeney" had me so worked up that i could barely pay attention to the show!
like the time angela lansbury sat next to me at "drowsy"...

Kate, you seem to really luck out when it comes to seating!
Ken - tell your wife that I am jealous of HER too! If I wanted a private serenade, I would probably request "Green, Green Dress." - *blushes*

I don't know what I would do if I ever see Sondheim in person. I think with my luck I would trip, and break my leg just two feet from him.
I am not afraid to say that I am very jealous at this point.
Katecab, that's so cool! Did you say something to her?
I had tickets for tonight. Probability would have it that this would eventually happen to me, though.
If it hadn't been the week before closing, I would have loved to see Bradley. But as curious as I am, since we're down to the wire and funds are not endless, I decided I'd prefer to see Raúl an extra time than to go in this time and possibly come out disappointed. I wish I had seen Bradley when he went on earlier in the show's run, though, because I wanted to check out his performance.
Becoz, we've already been discussing it for the past 2 hours in the Raul thread.
