Re-Interpreting MAME

I'm seeing Mame played by a huge puppet (did anyone see Jackie? Remember the Joe Kennedy puppet?). The puppet represents Mame's huge personality and her ability to fill a room.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Mame is a worker at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, and she is barren. She dreams of being rich and fabulous and having a child. All the other girls mock her and play musical instruments. At the end of every number, the foreman enters and beats them all brutally. The foreman eventually plays Beau. Patrick is "played" by a basket of scrap material. At the end, the fire breaks out, Mame goes completely mad, reprises "Open a New Window" while opening a window, and leaps out. Curtain.

It's not exactly re-interpreting MAME, but there's a production of MAME in Minneapolis right now where Mame is played by a man. Perhaps the first time Mame has been played by a man. No?
