Realizing how great GREY GARDENS was...

Posted: 12/14/08 at 12:06pmIt was a brillant show and I am very fortunate to have seen it 9 times. For some reason I was thinking about it a a couple days ago and for me, I would say that Grey Gardens, Ragtime, and Caroline or Change were the best new musicals of the past 10 years.

I just rediscovered the show a couple weeks ago!
I used to be a HUGE fan a few years but forgot about it.

Posted: 12/14/08 at 1:35pmI ordered the movie from Netflix before going to New York and seeing the show. Unfortunately it was backordered and didn't come before my departure. I was WOWED by the show. Upon my return home, there was the film in my mail so I watched it. I could be wrong, but I think I enjoyed the stage musical MORE not knowing the full story. I'm glad I hadn't seen the film before seeing it onstage.

Posted: 12/14/08 at 3:35pmI hadn't seen the documentary before I saw the show, although I had read some online material about Edie and her Mom. I did feel that I was missing some of the "inside jokes" while I was at the show--people were laughing at things that they obviously recognized from the movie, and I didn't get that--there were also some lines in some of the songs that confused me. But I still liked the show a lot, and when I got the cast album and listened to it several times, I really began to appreciate it and wished I could see it again. Unfortunately, by that time it had closed. I think some of the music is really beautiful and much of it is very, very moving. And of course Ebersole and Wilson were amazing.

Easily one of the most brilliant pieces of musical theater in the 2000's, I'm surprised it didn't get Pulitzer recognition (though I lost all faith in them after they ignored CAROLINE, OR CHANGE).
It does have its troubles, particularly in Act One. I know that by the time "Drift Away" came, I just rolled my eyes, since the whole sitting around a piano and singing concept got a bit old. However, when the whole piece came together, it just soared. The cast was magnificent (with Erin Davie giving the most underrated performance of the season). I'll never forget it.

I miss CAROLINE too...SO much.
CAROLINE (in my mind) is far, far, far superior to GREY GARDENS.

Roscoe still lives with his mother, so
this subject is a little touchy....

Posted: 12/15/08 at 8:22pmHow was it sentimental Roscoe? Were there Little Edies dancing on giant beach balls ala No, No Nannette! or tap dancing Big Edies? That's sentimental to me. Or nostaglic. Same thing.
