Hello, all.
Will be in NYC next month for 5 days. I'm not really interested in any of the shows on Broadway (except Doubt and Pillowman). Any recommendations for off-Broadway shows?
Musical, drama, comedy, revue....I'm open to anything.
Thanks

Well, if you know a lot about theater present and enjoy parodies of them, I fully recommend Forbidden Broadway, it is absolutely hilarious. Some of the jokes are funny even if you're not that Broadway-knowledgable, but it's great when you get it all.

I'd also recommend the Musical of Musicals: The Musical. Also, kind of a parody, takes a plot and shows it in styles of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Sondheim, Herman, Lloyd Webber, and Kander & Ebb. Again, the more you know about these specific composers and shows, the funnier it is.

I'm seeing Dessa Rose tomorrow, so can't comment on that one yet...

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

Altar Boyz
Blue Man Group (A must see)
Stomp
Forbidden Broadway:SVU
If it's playing, The Apple Tree. If it isn't, try Menopause. It's supposed to be pretty good.

If you have not seen Avenue Q (Which started Off Broadway at the Vineyard, check it out as Stephanie will be in it)
re: Recommendations for Shows
Also check out Dessa Rose at Lincoln Center. It is wonderful.
Norm Lewis is breathtaking and has a voice that will make you melt all over the theater. He is cute too! Updated On: 5/7/05 at 09:12 PM

Altar Boyz and Forbidden Broadway: SVU.

Between the two, I'd say Altar Boyz, but I'm biased. re: Recommendations for Shows

There are much better shows on Broadway and you should consider seeing anyone of the following Broadway shows before making the decision about going to an Off Bway one.

-Wicked, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Hairspray, The Phantom of the Opera, The Light in the Piazza, Doubt *as you mentioned*, Little Women, Sweet Charity, Chicago...

Some of the shows above I havent seen but have heard are great and are available on TKTS.

But if youre definitley shooting for an off bway show then go to Altar Boyz.

Well, between the two, I would pick FB SVU.
re: Recommendations for Shows
I liked Altar Boyz, it is a lot of fun and it is clever.
Just not as clever as FB SVU. The only thing that comes close is Avenue Q.
Dessa is a wonderful musical.
Dessa blows Wicked out of the water. But, that is just my opinion. I enjoyed Wicked, just not as much as most people.

Shockheaded Peter closes @ the end of May. Sorry I don't have any suggestions off Broadway, but your Broadway selections are excellent. Enjoy!

Definitely check out the Musical of Musicals - I saw it, and immediately bought the OCR for three of my friends after the show... there are so many inside jokes throughout...

NAKED BOYS SINGING, off-Broadway is delightful and hysterically funny...certainly a special treat for gay men but I know others love it too.....:)

I really do not recommend ALTAR BOYZ.

If you are seeing PILLOWMAN and DOUBT, I can't think of anything on or off bway that will even come close.

Is 12 Angry Men still open? That is a perfect piece of theater. Loved Altar Boyz for too much fun. Forbidden Broadway always hits the spot! Certain huge production shows are probably better in their original form than on tour - Hairspray, Wicked, and the gorgeousness that is Lion King.
