Ragtime got screwed, i feel. i love that album and i wish it hadn't opened the year Lion King did. Damn Micky Mouse!!!!

another good one that lasted for about thirty seconds is Side Show. that is an awsome musical!

Urinetown's untimely closing is also tragic.

Albums I hate, but the musical lasted FOREVER:
1. cats (i don't care. people are not meant to sing that high. when men are forced to sing notes considered high for a mezzo soprano, that's taking things a little too far)

2. Annie Get Your Gun (that it even opened makes it too long a run for me)

3. Lion King. i could just watch the movie, why pay seventeen dollars?

I disagree with Jekyll and Hyde... but then again I am biased because my school just did it and it was friggin' amazing. Anywho, my favorite Broadway Cast Recording would have to be Joseph... even though it's not really my favorite show in the world. It has some really great music, and that's good enough for me.

Did your school do the one man pyschotic meltdown at the end of Jekyll and Hyde? SO RIDICULOUS....

Originally, in Houston, they had this large looming mirror that Jekyll looked into and through some fog (ala Phantom's first appearance) we see Hyde (played by another actor, originally it was Dave Clemmons Hyde to Chuck Wagnor's Jekyll). The two battled it out and then in the end, he would shatter the mirror. It was Awesome. They tried something a little similar on tour but made the "mirror" image this weird projected video which just looked STUPID.

I laughed when I finally saw it on Broadway and he flips his hair back and forth.....so dumb.

I liked the mirror projection. When I saw that in Houston, it worked very well. The problem with the Clemmons/Wagner mirror duet is that they don't look or sound anything alike. Buit both of those versions were far superior to what landed on Broadway.

I love listening to "WHOREHOUSE II" all the time and I heard that the show was miserable.

and I enjoy the Cast Recording of Thou Shalt Not a little more then I loved the show.

I really like (most) of the music from 1776, but i had a HUGE issue sitting through the show.

ALSO i agree w/ jekyll and hyde, i liked the actors, but i'd much rather listen to it than EVER see it again.

where as i probably wouldn't EVER listen to but 2 or 3 songs from bounce, but i would watch it as a play repeatedly. (that was a TRUE shame)

Well, I guess

ASPECTS OF LOVE

would be on my list. Love the .... cast recording .... (gee, have ya all been to ATC today?) .... but the show ... well, no, I loved that, too. But it certainly didn't do well.

And I love Cole Porter's songs, but his books, or rather, the books to the shows, were not that great or watchable. I've seen and been in revivals, ya know.

BABES IN ARMS (Worse book/script in the movie, but the stage one ain't that great either.)
CARNIVAL (Too much angst. Just let me listen.)
BOYS FROM SYRACUSE (Shakespeare never shuts up! Get to the songs!)
THE FANTASTICKS (Don't like the show, love the music.)
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR (The story is too long for me, and I know it too well from church every Sunday. Just lay those tracks on me, Andy baby!)

But I disagree about 1776. I saw the revival twice and loved it. Yes, I did.

I think you people who think 1776 is a bore are philistines and should be subjected to nothing but Frank Wildhorn for the rest of your natural LIVES!!!!!!!

re: re: re: re: Musicals that were good on cd but bad on stage

I like 1776 as a show, but I just didn't care for that particular production. It seemed very antiseptic and manufactured. There was no heart or warmth in the performance I saw. I liked the film version better.

WEAK! you should be subjected to watching DAVID HASSELHOFF play John Adams the rest of your life! HA!

I didn't see the bway production i saw it at Ford's Theater in Washington, DC. so, maybe it was the production. but i LOVE the music and didn't enjoy myself during that show. I agree with Jesus Christ Superstar, it takes up to much of my life to sit through w/out a track skip--fast forward button.

Parade!
I've never seen the show but I know it didnt stay too long on Broadway. The score is unbelievable. I love Jason Robert Brown.

DIE DAVID HASSELHOFF!

I think that it all depends on the talents... What my school's production lacked technically (which wasn't a lot, honest to God), it sure made up for in talent. I don't know, it's one of my favorite shows. I love everything about it!

I strongly disagree with Aida, Mister Matt. I think the exact opposite. I saw the show, and LOVED it, and got the recording and didn't think it nearly as exciting as the show. The sets and costumes and lighting and costumes made the show for me, and while the music alone is nice, the spectacle is what really made the show so incredible.

I didn't find Aida to be a spectacle at all. The lighting was pretty, but that was about it. I didn't like the design or concept of the show at all. It just didn't make any sense to me. Had it been a contemporary retelling of the story along the lines of Rent, then I could've bought it, but nothing in the show remained consistant to the story. Well, except the opening and closing in the museum. That was the only part that worked for me. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a pretty show, but I wasn't amazed or astounded. There was nothing new going on that I haven't really seen before. Most of the lighting was very similar to The Lion King. I was simply quite confused by trying to figure out what they consider "ancient Egypt".
