Excuse me, little boy, but live shows DO NOT HAVE SOUNDTRACKS!!!!!!!! They are Broadway Cast Albums.
Movies (that most disgusting of all art forms) have SOUNDTRACKS.
Now please go up to the board and write it 100 times so you never make that mistake again!

Posted: 1/29/04 at 4:33pmYes, the "soundtrack" of "Close Encounters of a Third" is incredible, but as I recall the stage production was sadly wanting.

Posted: 1/29/04 at 4:36pmHmm, this might just be because the cast I saw for it was the opposite of energetic but Rent. I love the cd. And it is mostly the show. I don't know, maybe I just have this thing for the original cast. Oh, and the revival of Into the Woods, surprisingly enough Vanessa Williams sounds BETTER on the cd, as well as Little Red Ridinghood.

oh these theatre amateurs... what are we to do with them.
that annoys me almost as when i hear people call musicals "plays"....
Soundtracks contain the songs from a movie
Scores are the instrumental music played in movies

Posted: 1/29/04 at 4:41pmI just got the Amour cast album. It has some nice moments. Though, it was a complete bore from what I hear.

Posted: 1/29/04 at 4:43pmChess is a great recording with awesome numbers; however, the book sucks and the show itself is a bore... I really would love to see it reworked and rewritten because I think it could be an awesome show...

Posted: 1/29/04 at 4:56pmOk... I disagree with your selection of Ragtime not being as good on stage as the recording...but agree with your other choices.

HOUSE OF FLOWERS.
The Encores production proved without a doubt that this, one of Broadway's most lusciously beautiful scores, is married to a godawful, unworkable and REALLY unfixable book.

Posted: 1/29/04 at 5:30pmI love the recording of Ragtime, but I didn't care for the staging. The staging was so uneven. It couldn't decide if it was a spectacle or minimal. All those people crammed into the stairwells during New Music with practically a bare stage on hand. The Girl in the Swing that never swings with those nightmarish vaudeville costumes. And then I was so disappointed by the book. So many important characters that appear for a song and are never heard from again that were quite integral to the plot of the source material. For me, it was a real let-down. Beautiful score, though.

I'm with ya there, MisterMatt. Ragtime...oy. But a FABULOUS cd. Same with LAST FIVE YEARS.
But the revival of 1776?? I can't agree. Well...sorta...LOVED it when I saw it at the Criterion Center w/ Brent Spiner...not so much when in moved to the Gershwin.

Posted: 1/29/04 at 6:36pmI absolutely love the Broadway cast recording of Jekyll and Hyde, but everybody I have talked to who saw it on Broadway said that it really wasn't that great when compared to the cast recording

Posted: 1/29/04 at 7:02pmI only saw the final performance of 1776 at the Gershwin. I was in the balcony and that theatre simply swallowed the show. The production seemed pretty slow and was really lacking in emotion. I think the cast just wanted to go home.

Posted: 1/29/04 at 7:07pmChris, you know better than to confuse a cast album with a soundtrack. Now you're gonna get bitch-slapped from here to the curb!

Chris, I know you were joking.
1. CANDIDE (so I'm told, but I liked the Prince '75sh revival)
2. HOUSE OF FLOWERS
3. ST. LOUIS WOMAN
4. BLOOMER GIRL
5. TOO MANY GIRLS
Just to bring in some other shows.
Yours for class (not crass) on Broadway!
