Just returned from seeing Red tonight
I have to admit not knowing much about the subject matter. The show is a 2 character play involving Molina & his assistant. It was really odd but Molina sits on stage looking into space with his back to the audience a good 15 minutes before it starts. It comes in at about 1 Hour & 35 minutes with no intermission.
The play is well written & holds your interest. Molina commands the stage & should give Schreiver a run for his money come Tony time. His rant on the Four Seasons is a scene much like the Jack Nicholson scene in 5 Easy Pieces in that it blows you away. His assistant played by Eddie Redmayne, goes toe to toe with him in several scenes & they get into a verbal sparring match.
The TDF seats were regularly the highest prices ticket upstairs but since the theater is small, it was fine. There is no merchandise for sale I assume since it is scheduled for 15 weeks. In the Playbill, is a detailed 2 1/2 page (small print) synopsis entitled "Rothko".
See it if you get a chance.

He is sitting there for more than 15 minutes, he is there when they open the house at half hour. Also, he isn't staring into space, but studying his painting, which he then tells his assistant must be studied to see what it needs.
I do agree that he commands the stage and should give Schreiver a run for his money. The hour and a half flew by for me.

I just read about him on Wikipedia.
The play does not even allude to his marriage. I guess it was not pertenent to the piece so no mention was made of it.

True true.
I never even thought of that angle.
