I just watched the DVD of "Reefer Madness" and I wanted to get eveyone's opinion about this show. I don't know anything about the stage version, but I found the movie to be rather boring. I never found myself caring about the story or the music. The only peice of music that I can even recall now is the title music...Reefer Madness. The person I was watching it with even feel asleep...and he loves musicals.
Thoughts...opinions?

Well, everyone's entitled to their opinion.
I happened to love the movie.

It's a camp film based on an earlier REEFER MADNESS video which was supposed to be serious. Now, it just looks like camp.

Yeah, I got the premise...which is why I was excited to watch it...but it left me feeling cold and wishing that I had the last two hours back. Was that too harsh?

Well, I can't claim to know even the slightest thing about versions other than the recent movie (so I have nothing to compare to), but I thought I'd add my two cents anyhow.
I found it entertaining on a sort of mindless level -- I could sit and watch it without thinking too much about it. I did laugh at a few parts, but not a whole lot. I didn't find myself completely engrossed in the film, however, it did hold my attention (somewhat) the whole way through.
I don't think it is something I'd ever buy for my own collection, but I might watch it again if it's on TV and I'm channel surfing.
Mixed feelings/review.

I just thought I'd throw in the fact that I adore this musical. I bought the movie as soon as it came out and have watched it many times since. Everyone likes different kinds of things, but this one is my taste exactly. I love the camp and political humor. The acting is fun and over the top. The songs are catchy and really reflect the time period's pop culture (as does the dialogue).
Ok, that's all.

Dammit, Meredith. Now I have Little Mary Sunshine in my head.
Not that I'm upset - but I am...

Posted: 12/14/05 at 11:25amThe song Listen to Jesus Jimmy plays through my head at least twice daily. Great movie, great music and just alot of fun. It's not afraid to be a musical.

Posted: 12/14/05 at 1:30pmI think Reefer Madness is brilliant. But I also think that Bat Boy: The Musical and Rocky Horror Show are also brilliant. The reason being is that they're FUN. They realize how silly the whole musical theatre genre is and play up the silliness, rather than ignoring it. Personally, I've never laughed more than when I saw Miss Saigon for the first time(and second time as well) because it was just silly to me....so when musicals blatantly embrace the absurdity of the genre, then how can you not, in turn, embrace them?

Posted: 12/14/05 at 8:29pmMy boyfriend and I rented it one night and we watched it three times in a row, well the last time we just watched the musical numbers. We loved it, and he hates musicals. My only complaint-that night, I couldn't sleep because Romeo and Juliet keep going through my head to the point where I was about to go insane. I'd fall asleep for a few minutes and then wake up singing "We are just like Romeo and Juliet..." over and over again. I bought it the next day and I love this movie so much. Ana Gasteyer steals every scene she is in and the cast is great. I'm not sure there is anyone in the world cuter than Kristen Bell is when she's playing Mary.
