Posted: 3/6/08 at 12:12amI would suggest that you take her to see the Broadway production of RENT. I have seen it on Broadway twice (flew out from Canada) and twice on Tour. I prefer Broadway very much. I think, as other posters have said, just going for the experience of the Nederlander and seeing it in the theater it all began in would be just wonderful. This would be her last chance to see it on Broadway in its original run, which would really be quite something.

I would suggest lurking around on the RENT message boards to find out when Tamyra is taking a vacation. She doesn't have the best attendance record and both of her understudies are amazing (especially Caren).
But overall I think that Tamyra is only noticeably bad if you have seen amazing Mimis but if she has only seen Rosario in the film, she won't have a problem. Especially since Tamyra seems to emulate Rosario's Mimi more than anyone else.

Went ahead and got tickets for Rent after listening to everyones advice.
It was late at night and somehow when I got up the next day to print tickets, I noticed it was for a night I would not be in New York. Made several calls and got the situation corrected.
Thanks for everyones help. I will let you know how it goes after we see the show. Daughter really excited about seeing show. Gave her several other options that night and she chose this one.

LePetiteFromage: Only tickets left were about 2/3 back in left orchestra near center aisle. I think they will be fine.
LittlexFallxOfxRain:Waterproof mascara added.

LePetiteFromage: Bad choice of words on my part. I meant the seats were near the center orchestra seats and not near the wall.

I like mike:
Have a wonderful time! I think Rent is a great show for 20 somethings, and I think that some of those who tear the show apart forget what is like at that age.
I also think the material outshines any weak performers on the stage. Even with the weakest cast I've seen, I've never NOT been moved by Rent.
If your daughter enjoys the show in NY and enjoys the movie, I suggest trying to snag some 2009 tour tickets, too. I don't think you'll be disappointed!

hermoinejuliet: I hope it is a great show not only for a 20 something but for someone who has a 20 something daughter.
I may not be a 20 something anymore but I love the songs also.
We also saw the Drowsy Chaperone when it opened and we both loved it.

Oh definitely, I think Rent appeals to people of all ages. The emotions and experiences are shared by people of all walks of life and years. As long as you are young at heart, you'll love it.
I'm a huge Drowsy fan, too. Rent is very different, but if you know and like the songs you'll have a blast.

Will also have daughter give her thoughts also.

Posted: 3/22/08 at 5:01pmWent to Rent Monday night. Glad we followed everyones advice. Seats were left mezzanine row O. Well pleased with seats. Could have used more leg room?? Really liked the size and atmosphere of the theater though. Large enthusiastic crowd. Talked to several people and we were apparently one of few who had not seen play before. Front right mezzanine had a small group who would stand and applaud, cheer etc. Is that typical for Rent? Satisfied with actors. Had questioned would change of cast members make a difference since it had been on so long. I felt Mimi could have been stronger and my daughter felt Roger could have been stronger. Both good but... she loved it and I am glad she got the chance to see it on Broadway.

Posted: 3/23/08 at 9:42amLePetiteFrommage: Tamyra Gray was Mimi. I agree with your assessment. Declan Bennett was Roger. We have not seen other casts to compare with. As I said we have just seen the movie. Basing comments only on how they played out that night. Overall a very enjoyable night. Comments suggested by posters were very helpful and right on the mark. I imagine these type of posts get old to regular posters but they are extremely helpful for those who get to NY maybe once or twice a year or maybe once or twice in a lifetime. Daughter loved it. The atmosphere was more than just a play. I think Rent will be missed.

Posted: 3/23/08 at 11:55amHope you stick around mike, the stuff you have written has been great so far, and it will be nice to read your opinion as well (hate to say it but I'd be stoke to read the thoughts of your typical normal dad).

I am NOT a fan of Declan at all; at least as he is Roger. i think he has a unique voice that would work well in a rock band or a solo artist, but his Roger was missing so much. Then again, my first Roger on broadway was Adam, who leaves nothing to be desired, except maybe the ability to clone him
Tamyra I really like actually, although shes the only Mimi i've seen live.

I agree with LePetiteFromage on Tamyra. Good, but could have had more of an edge in acting. Looked like someone acting instead of someone actually being the part. The Roger my daughter was comparing to was Adam Pascal from movie. Correct me if I am wrong on that. She liked his Roger better than Declans Roger.
Everyones a critic!!!
As I said great night, just trying to give unprofessional opinion or observation on great evening.
