Has anyone had a problem with the quality of the sound on their copy of the Rent DVD? Got mine from Amazon last night and during a number of the songs, there are parts that drop out and sound really awful. In the theater, the sound wasn't great either. Just wondering if I got a bad copy or if that's just the way it is.

I had the same problem. I had to mess with the setting of my speakers. Do you have surround sound?
I do. I played it on a DVD player in another room without surround sound (just coming out of the TV speakers). I'll try it on the surround sound and play with the speakers. Thanks!
I'm actually going to have to take my DVD back and exchange it for a new one as I've tried playing it on several different DVD players and as soon as it gets to "What You Own" the screen freezes and won't play the rest of the movie...

yeah, the version I rented had a horrible sound quality.

It sounded like the levels were mixed oddly. For instance, during "Seasons of Love," the men's parts were noticeably louder than the women's; it was one of the first things I noticed. I assumed it was just my television.
On mine, sometimes the piano parts overwhelm the rest of it, including the vocals. That was when I had the sound coming out of my TV and surround sound. When I muted the TV, the sound was better.
I thought I was the only one...about every minute, the sound level goes up or down, depending on the DVD's mood. It's such a pain.
I'm not going to exchange it until new DVDs are made and this problem has been addressed.
I'm pretty sure my problem is due to either my TV or DVD player, but during "Over The Moon" and the scene where Mark fixes the mic and says "And we're patched." there is no echo from the microphone.
My sounds bad too. The back track for the music always overwhelms the vocals and the sound quality is just overall not very good.

Mine works fine.
My mom got mine from Wal-Mart, she tried Target and they said it sold out at 9 am!

Yeah I'm not saying that my sound quality is perfect. It's just after I messed with the speakers it improved majorly. At the moment I've just been trying to enjoy the movie rather than focus on its flaws. I'm sure after watching it a few more times I'll get annoyed by the sound.
Before I messed with the speakers the background music would randomly change volume. There were two other people in the room who didn't notice it but they had never seen the movie. It was so bad that I had to pause the movie and fix it before I could watch anymore.
Mine's okay. I've watched it with and without surround sound. Maybe there's a bad batch?

I haven't noticed any problems with my DVD, and that's without surround sound. I would try exchanging it and seeing if a new one works better.

No problems here. Got mine at Wal-Mart. Widescreen of course.

The only sound problem on my DVD is on the Public Service Announcement for the Jonathan Larson Foundation on the second disc. However, everything else is just AOK.
Look at the featurette, very informative. My favorite is definitely part one. It introduces us to Larson stuff that I know absolutely nothing about, like one of his songs in "Away We Go!" and a lost "Superbia" song, and a random song that goes "Someone get these people out of here before I have a nervous breakdown I can't smile any harder and I wanna shoot them..." Very informative.

I haven't noticed anything bad on mine. I watched it twice now. I skip parts though alot because I don't like every song. I love most of them though except 2. Over the moon and Sante Fe. I am getting tired of those songs listened to them tooo much.
i got my copy today and didn't notice any sound problems.

Maybe I'll try exchanging mine. My DVD case is kinda messed up so I was looking for a reason to exchange it anyways.

No, its not your TV. I knew I wouldn't be able to go to the bank and get money to buy the dvd because my rehearsals are during bank hours, so I rented a copy, and I noticed when Maureen is trying to stop the riot, I wasn't hearing any echo whatsoever. So I rewound as far as 'parched' and...nothing.
Well I watched it in my room without surround sound and in some parts (particularly Out Tonight) the vocals were louder than the music. And during Goodbye Love, the music is barely audible but the dialogue is loud. I should watch it at my dad's in the basement because they have surround sound I'll see how it is.
mine freezes at the same spot too
You know, I watched mine twice yesterday. Didn't notice anything.
Now that I've read this, though, the sound feels uneve to me when I listen to it again. I'm partly wondering though--is it possible that's just the way it was recorded? It almost sounds like it fluctuates because of the street noise/proximity to the camera. I'm not sure that's going to get fixed.

Wow. I was just about to go get it, but now... I don't know! I've never heard of so many people having such trouble with a DVD. Hmm... I guess I'll just have to wait.
