I have a lot of doubts, but "star" casting could be done right if they're careful. [Brittney Murphey could be good for Maureen, a big name to boost intrest but with a character that's not too complicated.] My biggest fear is that the story will vary too much or that that characters will be changed to suit a "family" audience. Yeah, Roger can not, under any circumstances, be a backstreet boy. They need someone with edge.

thanks JohnPopa for the link! Bon Jovie rocks! one of the only bands i truely can say i like. I just like some songs that other do but not the group oersonally. I would much rather see someone from the rock world take on the role of Roger. You NEED to have the edge in you. Thats why Jonathan chose Adam. He wasnt an actor that played the part of a rocker, he WAS one. Being that he was Jonathans pick and was the original, i thnk that it should follow suit in the way the cast the movie. If only Bon Jovi was younger (and adam for that matter)
As for mimi i am still torn b/t maya nad beyonce.
Any ACTORS/ACTRESSES that can pull off the parts rather than just getting singers?

I don't think beyonce is trashy or edgy enough to play MIMI!

Rent is only 2 hours 40 minutes including intermission, so they wouldn't actually have to cut anything for the movie to get it under 3 hours, now would they?
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

"ms. frock", findingnamo was making fun of your typo when you said "maya nad beyonce" instead of "maya and beyonce", which was what i was refering to when i posted the word "unnecessary".

since Columbus is on board to direct I'm just hoping the movie dies a swift death like the other times it's been 'back on track.' Because with Columbus directing it will obviously suck.
he's completely wrong in every way but one: he can handle Rent's sentimental streak. Otherwise he's completely wrong.
he has no edge and Rent is a polysexual rock opera. As a filmmaker he can't do atmosphere and time -so recreating the feel of 80s east village denizens will be a bust. it'll feel generic or like so many movies about NYC where it looks and feels like wherever its filmed -say, Toronto, a common destination these days for movies. And what's the closest he's come to staging a musical sequence? the lipsynching in the bedroom in Stepmom.
this movie will be. B-A-D.

Okay, enough Columbus bashing! None of us here know what his pitch to Warner Bros. was about how he wants to film this. He might be absolutely in love with this musical and want to preserve it on film in a way that will hold true to the original concept. None of us know. Who the hell even knows which script they're working with now. His other films have been huge successes and for their genre were good. He made HARRY POTTER a three hour long film so hardcore fans wouldn't be upset with cutting too much out. The same could hold true here. He's not like George Lucas who could care less what the general public wants (That's a whole other thread DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED), he wants to make sure people enjoy his work. And judging by the fact that his films are some of the highest grossing in cinema history, he's doing his job.
There are a ton of directors who mainly direct crap but they hit gold every once in a while. Let's see what happens before we start going for blood.

I'm just thrilled that no Broadway people will be in it!
Thank GOD!
If we left it up to y'all Karen Ziemba would be Mimi and Nathan Lane, Angel!

Now that you mention it...I think AJ (yes, the one with the alcohol problem) would make a great roger. He has a great voice, and I wouldn't be surprised if he had acting skills. He's actually very talented.

Well, Ziemba did get her umpteenth undeserved Tony nod. That should make her more than worthy, don't cha think? She's awesome and amazing.

No, I think I'll keep trashing Columbus, just because I'm contrary that way. :) He made Harry Potter into little more than the movie version of books-on-tape because he couldn't think of anything better to do, or he was too scared to try. His movies are servicable, but he's not terribly creative. He could make a respectable Rent movie, perhaps, but not a great one.
(Then again, I'm not wild about the source material, so what do I know?)

I think I am the only one who really enjoyed the Harry Potter movies. As a casual fan of the books, I thought they were really well done. It's probably true that Columbus didn't take a whole lot of creative risks with the projects, but I didn't find them disappointing in anyway. They were, after all, film versions of the book. And if he had steered too far away from that, people would be complaining on the other extreme.
