I wonder if they'll have Mimi die at the end? The ending of the show is hard to buy on stage, on film it'll be even worse.

Or if they'll try to set it in modern day...? Or keep in in the nineties. Will East Village bohemians who sound like Styx when they sing work on film?

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I think Timberlake would be much better suited vocally for Mark instead of Roger!

Yes JohnPopa- Rent is a rock musical, but the songs are beautifully written making you feel like your listening to your inner soul on stage. I dont know of a score to have so much meaning and brilliance.
Thats what I meant by intimate.

I wouldn't waste my energy doing one of the boards infamous casting threads. I doubt this movie will happen while any of us OR them (Beyonce'Murphy,Aguilera et al), are young enough to enjoy it(us), be in it,(them).

The fact is, any Broadway musical given a film treatment will be thoroughly thrashed by Broadway fans regardless whom is cast or directing. It's always the same. Hollywood and Broadway are two different worlds that, on occasion, share similar stories, with vastly different visions and intent.

Of course they will throw in pop stars and celebrities into the leads. To expect anything else, would be folly. Luckily, Rent is a pop show that requires pop voices, so there is a large pool of singing talent to choose from. Maybe they will teach a couple of them to act, but I doubt it. With Chris Columbus directing, don't expect a whole lot of "edge" to the film. Unless he's changing his tune, expect it to be glossy and pretty and most likely toned down quite a bit. His "edgiest" work to date would be the horrendous dud "Monkeybone" and upcoming would be "The Fantastic Four". I'm still not quite sure why anyone thought he would be the perfect choice for this particular project. My choice would be Steven Soderbergh or Michael Mann. I think Baz Luhrmann would put some kind of surreal slick twist to it that would be visually stunning and detract from the story. He would never do it anyway. I'm still not sure how he thought Rent was based on his production of La Boheme. Other than the story (which wasn't Baz's anyway), they bear no resemblance.

i say forget the movie versions, tape all the damn shows for video, wait 3 years after closing night and put it on DVD... then you have your theatre stars and the shows intact... musical theatre and movie musicals are not the same. But lets pray rent does turn out ok.'

ps last i heard moulin rouge was never coming to bway, but be a differnt style show in vegas.

Thank you Stop!. That's exactly how I feel about it. Let Hollywood do as it pleases, but get copies of the shows while they are still in the theaters. That way those of us exiled to Los Angeles can see more than just the toned down touring companies.

Voice....I hope you were being sarcastic about the whole Justin and the Grammys thing...he really CANNOT sing rent's score ESPECIALLY the part of roger. He is just fine for his solo music, but RENT? PLEASE NO.

This just depressed my day...

First of all, since I'm obsessed with RENT and have heard this countless of times, I say THERE SHOULD BE NO RENT MOVIE!!!! NONE!!!!! NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!! NO RENT MOVIE!!!!!!!!

Ok...I have 2 questions...
1) If they were to cut at least 40 minutes, what would they cut? I'm guessing "We're Okay" and "Contact", but that is about 14 minutes worth of stuff...
2) IF (and note that the IF is in capital letters) Justin Timberlake is in the movie, don't you figure that all the little 10-year-old teeney boppers are going to flock to see him? Yea- a 10 year old is really going to understand what all that stuff is...Who are they kidding???

But, since I'm going to have some fun, here's the cast that I would like to see (of course this is second choice from the OBCR):
Benny- Taye Diggs
Collins- Jesse Martin (both Taye and Jesse are big names, and we all know that they're capable of the parts)
Angel- Jai Rodriguez (also a big name)
Soloist #1 or Joanne- Jennifer Hudson (a semi-big name)
Mimi- ok, this is a tough one. I think Maya could do it, but I don't want teeny boppers flocking to see RENT, so I say Karmine Alers.
Roger- Jeremy Kusiner- definately.
Maureen- I'd love to see Maggie Benjamin do it
Mark- Hunter Foster- I think he might be interesting in the role.

For the rest, it could be anybody...I have a feeling I'm missing one of the main characters, but maybe i'm just crazy...

I have my books and my poetry to protect me...

I feel bad for you Rent fans. You got Chris Columbus both writing and directing this movie...yikes. He is one of the worst directors you could get.

ok im such a sucker for this mock casting stuff so here is my list.

Angel: Jai Rodriguez

Benny: Taye Diggs

Mimi: Maya or J-Lo (i would prefer a broadway person doing this but lets face it, you need ppl to go see it. She can act, sing, and dance, just dont know about the blue pants....)

Maureen: Idina or Britney Murphy - i am taking ur guys word that she can sing -- i never heard her but i can picture her in the part

Joanne: Jennifer Hudson

i dont know about the rest .. once i think of some ill post my thoughts .. maybe getting an unknown for Roger or Mark either someone from broadway or just an unknown in general with a star cast surrounding them. just my thoughts

I got their ages from their birthdays listed on IMDb and Broadway.com. You can be the judge of the validity of those sites.

If Justin, Xtina or Britney are invovled I will never see it. They would butcher a raw, heartfelt show like Rent and turn it into a cheap publicity gag. I couldn't care less how old the original stars are, I want to see them (yeah, it'll never happen, but that's my ideal) If they didn't want to use big stars to draw an audience, marketing "The Originals" would be good.

Rent is something you have to feel. I don't care how corny that sounds, but they need authentics if they're gonna pull this off. I don't know much about directors, but I didn't like Chris Columbus' take on Harry Potter.

Rent really has gotten away from its roots with Scary Spice and that N'Sync guy. This movie could kill what life this show has left. OR it could be the gritty, real show Jonathan Larson intended it to be. Cross your fingers.

Voiceanth- I looove Jason Mraz's voice. I agree he would be an awesome Mark.

I think Jason Mraz would be interesting to see (in a good way). I also agree with Maya as Mimi and Queen Latifa as Joanne. As far as Chris Columbus goes...eh.....I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, so I loved the movies no matter what, but I was so excited that Alfonso Cuaran took over the project for the third movie. Columbus, as previously stated, has no edge....if he does this movie, he's really gonna have to prove himself. None of the power and adrinaline and emotion of Rent can be sacrificed for any reason...not to appease the public as a family movie, or for any other reason.

One thing that CAN be said about him is that he respects a big fan base. He cut absolutely as little as possible out of the HP movies in order to not anger fans. Someone said the movie couldn't be over 2:20, but HP1 is 2:30 and HP2 is 2:45. If he knows how the fans feel, he hopefully will not cut much at all.....please don't cut songs and make then into dialogue!! I know, it's a pipe dream...but still.

Also, it kind of irritates me when some people are SO SO against a Rent movie because it "goes exactly against what Jonathan Larson was trying to say." But ponder this: think of the hundreds upon hundreds of people who can't afford the theatre....or who live in very remote areas and can't get to Bway (touring productions only come around so often and it's still big bucks)....don't you think JL would like to get his message to as many people as possible? Shouldn't less fortunate people in Texas have the same opportunity to experience this amazing show? I mean, Rent has touched ME so much and I haven't actually ever even seen the show! I'm not accusing anyone on this site, but some people are so obsessively posessive about the theatre...it's like they don't want to share it with poor people who don't live in New York. the Rent movie is FINALLY here! Please, Mr. Columbus, do it right!!

This thread is just bizarre. Do people not understand how finance works? Or, understand the concept of profit making?

BroadwayDiva - Your cast list is just unreal. Hunter Foster? Why?! Let me ask you honestly - if Hunter Foster wasn't on Broadway, would you have picked him? No. Because if Hunter Foster wasn't on Broadway you probably wouldn't even know who he was.

And wickedrawbrt - "there will be untalented stars in this vehicle". I'm confused. Do you not seem to understand that just because somebody isn't on Broadway, they are still a success in their own field? Justin, Beyonce, even Britney, have so much talent it's unreal -- they would not BE Justin, Beyonce and Britney if they were talentless.

And, personally, I will believe the Rent film when I see it. And if it's cast with complete unknowns and with Hunter Foster, I will donate $10 to a charity of your choice.

"Justin, Beyonce, even Britney, have so much talent it's unreal -- they would not BE Justin, Beyonce and Britney if they were talentless"

or it could be they looked a certain way. Thats another sad fact about marketing and the pop world. Its not based on real raw talent. its a package deal with more emphasis on the outer packaging. I am not saying that these people arent talented, i would mind if beyonce was mimi, but to say they got where they were soley on talent is unrealistic.

I think Columbus will be able to handle the complexity of 'Rent.,' People standing around singing in their apartment, people standing around singing in the streets, people standing around singing in another apartment, people standing around singing on a different street.

I think he can cover it.

As much as I believe that a lot of the success of current popstars resides in their marketing, that does not necessarily take away the fact that they are indeed talented. This does not go for everyone, but Justin Timberlake is quite a talented individual. I am not a huge N'Sync fan, nor a huge Justin fan, so I like to think that my opinion of him is somewhat objective. That guy knows how to perform. If you don't think so, go and rent the PopOdyssey DVD from your local Blockbuster and watch "Gone". He knows how to sell, and he is a very natural entertainer. I think he'd be able to pull off pretty much anything handed to him, within reason, and I wouldn't be disappointed to see him in this. Updated On: 5/8/04 at 12:40 PM
