Though I will be very happy if it comes out in Feb or March, what's the point of even releasing it theatrically in Europe in April ? Most of the European Rentheads will have already got the Region One DVD, since most DVD players in Europe are chipped to be multiregion, anyway. I am sooo scared this will be a straight to DVD release for most of the European countries !
And if emcee is right (and she usually is) and the deleted scenes, commentary, bloopers and documentary are the only extras, it doesn't sound like a 2-disk one

emcee was listing things that will probably be on the DVD, not the ONLY things that will be on the dvd. With all the stuff they did on the blogs and fan related, who knows what else will be on it?

wow! the movie's only been out for what? 3 weeks? and already talks of a dvd are going on...and as soon as late february.
sony is obviously rushing this out on dvd to try to make some of it's money back due to the less-than-stellar box office numbers.
i'm hoping and praying that what happened to the movie version of RENT doesn't happen to DREAMGIRLS.

Ok so the "longer a movie is in theaters..." thing is just not the case anymore. In fact as someone else mentioned in another Rent thread, the dvd release, and cable air rights are worked out prior to the movie being released. Now don't get me wrong if a movie isn't doing good they may push up the release, or if doing better than though push it back.
I initially heard (from an insider) march, april, but that Feb date seems very reliable. As also mentioned on another thread Rent will be on starz in July, and starz already plans to air narnia next nov/dec. Now Narnia looks to be a big hit and will proabably be in theaters for about 6 months (based on harry potter movies). So dvd sept? for narnia not RENT!

After bothering my insider friend he said plans look like a dvd late winter early spring, cable premier on starz in summer, and a deluxe dvd 2006 christmas earliest, if not 2007. taken all with grain of salt.

I really wanna see behind the scenes stuff. I guess maybe because I'm a film student, watching the stuff being made really intrigues me.

The DVD will be out sooner than fall 2006.

I can speak "in general" on DVD production, but not specifically to this title (without getting into trouble here), but most of the work on a DVD (making of, deleted scenes, commentary, menu design and packaging) is completed just as, or within a couple of weeks after, the film opens nationally. The rest of the time is spent QC'ing the materials, authoring the glass masters, and replicating for worldwide release dates. It takes a long time to put these discs together, but production schedules for DVDs are usually simultaneous as the film is finishing up production. On bigger titles, it can even start before filming actually begins.

Not really. Most studios are working on DVD features while they are still making the movie, regardless of how successful the movie is. A documentary for the DVD release of "Rent" was being filmed as the movie itself was filming.

In fact, if you look on Netflix.com, not only is "Rent" listed and available to save to your queue, so is the new version of "King Kong," and that's not even released in theaters yet.

One reason analysts believe box office receipts are lower this year is because of home theater systems being so good that people just wait for DVDs, which is why the window between theatrical release and DVD release has gotten so much shorter.

In fact, Bob Iger, the new chairman of Disney, is even pushing for theater chains to carry DVD versions of NEW movies, so people can buy them in the theater if they like them.

February sounds about right the "Rent" release. I'm guessing March for the new "Harry Potter," and probably April for "Narnia" (especially if Disney is still marketing to church groups--get the DVD ready for Easter!)

JenD512 --- As much as studio execs might want that "window" to shrink down that much (having DVDs available simultaneously as a film is released), it really isn't possible. As it is now, DVD production is usually waiting until the very last minute to get a clean approved print of the film to finish their "special features." It's already a rush to get them replicated and on the shelves as fast as they are now. Trust me, I know.

The only way it would work is if a clean print of the "telecinied" film would be available several months before it opened. It's rare (if ever) that a finished film is ready that far ahead of the release date.

yes, but working on DVD features as the movie is being filmed, etc. is almost the norm in the industry for every major release. i really wasn't questioning that.

and of course netflix is going to have rent and king kong in queue simply because a dvd release is inevitable.

what i was questioning was the february release date ~ that's only 3 months after the theatrical release date. six months is the norm and if the movie is a big, big hit they will hold off an a dvd release a little longer.

it's obvious that rent is being pushed for a very early dvd release date simply because of it's lack of box office and the studio wants to recoup as quickly as possible.

my2cents--- Sorry I misread you above!

I would actually be surprised if they held Narnia that long, being that it's opening now. I would look for a late-spring, early summer release. That's a (very) educated guess though here... not factual inside info.

CHICAGO went into limited release on December 27th.
It then went into wide release on January 24th.
The DVD was released on August 19th.
That's eight months.

Obviously it wasn't released on DVD sooner because not only was it a box office blockbuster it went on to win 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture. It was already making money for the studio and they didn't feel the need to rush it out on DVD to re-coup costs. DVD sales would have just been icing on the cake since the studio made all of it's money back and then some on it's USA theatrical release ALONE. When you figure in Internantional box office receipts the movie made major money for Miramax and was an unqualified success all around.

Marquise --- You've got it exactly right. When a film is a big hit, it's not (usually) rushed on to a DVD street date. There are exceptions. But when a big budgeted film is (shall we say) a not-so-big-hit? They actually push up the street date to get it out on the shelves ASAP.

It can be murder on a production schedule.

I know too...trust me, Iger's plan was not just something I read in the paper.

Movies are not going show up ready-to-go in cineplexes anytime soon. Plenty of studios and directors are fighting it (and rightly so). But that idea is out there, and with that DVD window getting shorter and shorter, I wouldn't be surprised to some version of it happening eventually.

The window for "Rent" really isn't a reflection of it's box office. They probably had that release time scheduled before the theatrical release. And it probably won't have all of the special features it should.

They'll save those for the "Special Edition" version next Christmas.

Unless it's a summer movie--they're out in time for Christmas.

"Star Wars Episode 3" was released 5/19, the DVD was out 11/1.
"Batman Begins" was released 6/15, the DVD was out 10/16.
"War of the Worlds" was released 7/4, the DVD was out 11/22.
"Fantastic Four" was released 7/8, the DVD was out 12/5.

And the release dates were all announced during the theatrical run. In fact, the Star Wars dates were pretty much known before that was released in theaters--fan sites were reporting from stores they worked at that the movie was going to be shipped to them in November.

I'll bet by this day next year, I'll have DVDs of "X-Men 3", "Superman Returns", and "Pirates of the Caribbean 2". And they're going to be huge next summer.

So does this mean the first dvd release won't have everything? Or is this just speculation? I certainly hope it's not true, because I can't afford to buy two versions of the same movie.
