Many people...you might not know them, though.
Don't worry about it...usually the unknowns are better.

Frenchie Davis (from American Idol) is the biggest name in the show right now, but I believe she is leaving to do another show (was it But, I'm a Cheerleader? I'm not sure) so she could be gone by your birthday anyway.
In it's earliest form, Rent was basically a musical full of basically unknown actors and that is part of it's charm for me. I find that more often than not seeing someone who you "know" in a musical can be distracting.
You tend to say "Hey, look at Joey from NSYNC as Mark" rather than "Hey, look at Mark."

everyone in the show is known to those in the know.
honestly, do you want a celebrity to be in the show? If so, then you've completely missed the point.

Posted: 9/4/05 at 3:30pmno one but frenchie is "known". that is such a shame, too b/c they are all amazing performers who deserve to be well known.

Frenchie Davis.
You're LUCKY that no one else who is "known" is in there right now.
I sat through Drew Lachey's performance... I guess it could have been worse (he could hit the notes! you couldn't understand a word he said... but he could hit the notes, which is much more than I've heard about Scary Spice), but it left a helluva lot to be desired. :-/
Other than that, the cast was good. You'll have fun, methinks.

Posted: 9/4/05 at 6:37pmThe current cast is amazing! I absolutly love Cary Shields and Karmine Alers (everyone go out and buy her solo CD by the way); yeah, like loudasthehelliwant said, you're lucky that Frenchie is the only "known" one.

Posted: 9/4/05 at 7:36pmWhen i saw rent a few weeks ago, Jay Wilkison (understudy for roger)performed. He's from the soap opera one life too live. i'm a huge soap fan so that was all too exciting for me. I thought he was great.

Yay! Enjoy the show! I've never been a huge fan of stunt casting, so I actually prefer real performers with musical theatre training to tackle the roles. It actually makes me frustrated that Broadway performers don't always get the recoginition that they deserve...they're uber talented people! :)

Posted: 9/5/05 at 3:52amI wasn't really blown away by Rent. It was okay, but it didn't strike anything with me, because I did not live in NYC during the 90's and have HIV+ friends. That's kinda their demographic. I was mad that I missed Frenchie though.

Posted: 9/5/05 at 7:07amI think RENT appeals to and connects with more people than just those who liv/lived in NY or have HIV+ friends. I mean, it appeals to all of those who are creative artists, those who dont support the "corporate america", love, death, etc.

I agree w/Little Broken.
If RENT didn't touch you, it didn't touch you and that's ok.
But I don't think it touches only people who live in NY or HIV+. In fact I think most of its fans haven't. I would say that it appeals to more than just "creative artists" too. I think that the idea is that it's the East Village for the middle class isn't so far off. It's really written for people who haven't actually lived that life style, and many people who haven't lived that life style love it and even find a way of identifying with it (b/c the messages are for EVERYONE
