So I'll be returning to NY this summer with a friend who has never been to NY.
I'm taking her to one of my tried and true favorites along with Rent which we both love. We are also going to try [title of show]. We will have on show opening left, and I am debating between Passing Strange and In the Heights - both of which I've seen. I was wondering which one is better for a 2nd viewing.
I left my last trip loving Passing Strange and not too enthralled with In the Heights. However, I have been listening to the OBC recording and I'm kinda digging In the Heights more than Passing Strange. For those who have seen both more than once, which gave the most enjoyable repeat viewing?
I would try something different, but we want to see all musicals and Xanadu, A Catered Affair, Cry Baby really don't interest me at all. We would like to avoid Disney, so while I do have a passing interest in Mermaid and Poppins, I can definitely wait till the tour. I've done Wicked way too many times. That leaves very few choices...
If Billy Elliot was there this summer, I'd be all about that, but that isn't an option.
However, I am open to other suggestions, too...

agreed Blaxx, Xanadu looked really stupid to me at first, but it was an enjoyable evening of theatre.
In the Heights would be better for a repeat viewing(in my opinion), but only see it if your friend hasnt.
The Little Mermaid was visually stunning, and is going to be a hard show to tour, in my opinion.
I too suggest branching out. Why must you see musicals?? There are some TERRIFIC strait plays currently running.
I would highly suggest BOEING BOEING, something I fully enjoyed.

Gypsy or South Pacific are my standard recommendations! they're both brilliant!
Xanadu was also wonderful!

If I lived in NY, I would love to see EVERYTHING at least once. I love all types of theatre. However, since NY is a special event, I like to attend musicals because they are SO much better on Broadway. It just gives me that good feeling to walk out of the theatre on to a NY street after being surrounded by music and a great story.
I love straight plays and have seen several on Broadway, but I often find the same level of enjoyment of plays here at home. The musicals just seems to have better singing, music, sets, lights than anything that can be produced here at home. Even by the best of theatre companies. Even seeing a Broadway show on tour isn't the same, in my opinion.
My friend hasn't seen Passing Strange or In the Heights, and I believe there are elements in both that are worth seeing/hearing.

Gypsy is THE quintessential Broadway musical. If you could only see one musical on broadway in your life it should be gypsy! Especially with Patti LuPone (chances are you'll only see Patti on broadway - don't expect any tours with her).
In my opinion; Gypsy and South Pacific are in a league so much higher than all current productions on bradway! Afterall they're both American musical classics!

If you're digging ITH, do Heights.
This show is getting better and better later in its run.
-Jeff Bowen's worst onstage line flub.

I was thinking about doing Gypsy on my last trip. However, I'd only be going to see Patti as I'm not a huge Gypsy fan...
I saw Patti sing Rose's Turn when she did a concert here this winter, and it was fabulous. So I know SHE would live up to my expectations. I'm just not a huge fan of the show.
