re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

Ditto scoundrelsgirl, she's the only Muriel I've seen other than Joanna, she really has a gorgeous voice.

I suggested Karen Ziemba on a previous thread several weeks ago and still feel that she is the absolute best choice for the role.

What about Jamie Lee Curtis?

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

I don't remember the understudy I saw, but she was amazing. I was so disappointed not to see Johanna, but she was incredible in the role. The only problem I had was that she looked a little young for it. And it was really hard to tell her and the Jolene understudy apart.

My vote goes to Julia Murney, although I doubt she'd do it.

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

Taller, I think Julia would be a great Christine.

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

I didn't know Laura was the Muriel u/s, hmmm I bet she'd be cute in that part.

Julia Murney as Christine?! Julia is not a soprano...

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

I don't think Julia would make a good Christine at all. She makes everything too dirty. Although if you told her that, I'm sure she'd laugh but be secretly flattered. She's such a Muriel.

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

Are you kidding me? Julia is PERFECT for Christine. Julia, like Sherie, is a expert belter who would tear through those songs. I'm hoping she is cast as Sherie's replacement.

ETA: Julia is WAY too young for Muriel, so it's a moot point anyway.

And Murney wouldn't do it because...she has such a huge Broadway career?

My thoughts exactly, darling. It's not like people have been breaking her door down with offers since LENNON closed...

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

Laura Marie Duncan is about the same age as Julia, plus she looks like she's about..twelve, and she got RAVE reviews when she went on for Joanna.

I agree that Julia could sing those songs as no one has ever heard them before, but I'm going more on the acting. Throughout the majority of the show, Christine is an innocent, somewhat ditzy character. Now ditzy Julia can do. Innocent? Not so much the type of innocence they have portrayed Christine as having in the past.

Don't get me wrong, I would love it if Julia was cast in my current favorite show. Period. However, the thought of Julia delivering some of Muriel's Act Two lines is appealing...

Christine Ebersole would be perfection.
Question: Will Esparza win for The Homecoming? BobbyBubby: I hope so. If only for the mental health of many people on this board.

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

Ebersole WOULD be WONDERFUL. Also, what about Michelle Lee? Or Jan Hooks?

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

I forget the name of Joanna's understudy (she has 2, but I believe that this is the one who normally would be picked first to go on in Joanna's absence) but she has an AMAZING voice. I heard her sing at a local cabaret that featured Broadway understudies. She can belt, sing opera, you name it... and she has that "Joanna" look to her (but blonder.) I don't know how her acting is, but the first song she did blew me away, and the second (she sang Joanna's solo number from DRS) was very funny. I hope she gets the opportunity to do the part.

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

I'm speculating, but I would imagine her understudies would be too young for the role.

WOW, Rath. That's a GORGEOUS shot of Debbie! Maybe she will just go down the street and take over the role!

Much as I adore the Monk, I don't believe she's right for the role either.

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

She's not, but I just had to comment on that pic. She could sing the part and do the wise-cracking humor, but I don't think she naturally has that aristocratic air that's needed.

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

I think she can definitely do the aristocratic thing - it's the flighty aspect that I have trouble with.
