Replacement for Joanna Gleason

I have been pondering when Ms. Gleason decides to leave DRS, WHO could take her place and do it justice. I have come up with 2 names so far, I tried Liza, But it just wouldn't work out - SO I was thinking possibly either Audra Macdonald, Christine Baranski - or even possibly Lucie Arnaz, The only thing is Lucie is already booked through (I believe) next fall in 2 shows she is going to tour so she may not be available. Anyone else have any thoughts of fave's here? Tis not very easy to fill Ms. Gleasons shoes, that is a fact! Love Ya Joanna, Chris & Family!!!

I strongly disagree with Audra MacDonald...

Christine Baranski would work. Lucie Arnaz probably would too. I wouldn't mind seeing Karen Ziemba do it.

donna murphy would be swell i think. however, i dont think that'd be realistic

Donna Murphy is not going to take a supporting role.

I think Ziemba would be swell.

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

The only reason Joanna better be leaving is because she was cast in THE FIRST WIVES CLUB, the musical. It is fate that she play Annie.

As for her replacement...perhaps Bebe Neuwirth?

Well her understudies, Rachel de Benedet and Laura Marie Duncan, are both very very good. They would do just fine to be perfectly honest.

FOA, get real. You want to call Bebe and offer her a supporting role, and hear her response?

Rath, eh, I tried.

I guess it's just out of my desperation to see her in something new on Broadway.

Rathnait62, THAT WAS SO FUNNY!!! (The Bebe remark!! LOL!!!)
And, just to ask, WHAT would be so wrong with Audra??

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

jimmirae, Audra won't take a supporting, replacement role either.

Randy Graff, IMO, is a bit too earthy. Ziemba and Gleason are both able to do that funny, flighty thing.

I second Karen Ziemba.

Wouldn't Audra be a bit young for Muriel?

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

Perhaps she can. I've missed it, though.

Ziemba and Gleason both have that long, lean look - for some reason, it just seems to fit that character.

BSO, she'd kick you for even suggesting it.

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

Actually, I'm not quite sure currently as the ensemble has been shuffling, but Rak certainly has never been a Muriel understudy...I mean I love her, but wow I can't see her as Muriel. She's one of Jolene understudies. The 3 ladies that have understudied her are Rachel de Benect, Laura, and Paula Leggat Chase. Julie Connor might have once been listed as her understudy, but I don't think she went on.

And as much as I adore these women, they really aren't physically/age appropriate for the character, only makes the fact that they understudy more amazing(there's aren't really any slightly oldish women in the ensemble), so I couldn't see them taking over the role. Besides Laura in particular deserves to originate a role on Broadway.

In terms of replacements...can Christine sing? I could see her...I mean Joanna's style is so unique it's hard to imagine anyone else, though I'm sure others could do an ample job.

Hmm, Andrea Martin comes to my mind...she certainly is funny.

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

Personally I feel that no one could replace Joanna Gleason, she was just great in the role. As for a replacement, I still think Bebe would be great in role and if she put up a fuss about being in a supportive role I would say, "Stop being such a prima donna."

I'm also really hoping they will one day turn DRS into a film, A "Musical" of course, It works so well with the music and it has been a while since the original which was 1993 I believe? I never got to see the film and now, I don't know if I could - Is it any good?

re: Replacement for Joanna Gleason

Are you asking if Christine Baranski can sing?

Hell yes.

Andrea Martin is not physically nor vocally right for the role.

If Christine Baranski took over - I will be trying the lotto every chance I get.
