Posted: 5/12/07 at 2:23pmThe original performer's contract ends and they get someone else to do the show. I'm sure people have been fired before, but when you say Katie Clarke is the replacement of Kelli O'Hara for the part of Clara, you're not saying Kelli was fired.

Actors sign a contract. When it ends, they have an option to either continue or not. If they choose not to continue, a replacement takes over the role. Simple as that.
Like any job, anyone can be fired at any time. Again...if an actor is 'fired'/'let go', a replacement is hired.

Replacement: someone who takes the place of another person
Instances when a replacement is used:
1. A contract expires and the performer decides not to renew it. Example: Sutton Foster in The Drowsy Chaperone
2. A contract expires and the producers decide not to renew it.
3. A performer is fired mid-contract. Example: Henry Goodman in The Producers
4. A performer chooses to get out of their contract in order to take a role in a new show. Example: Kelli O'Hara in The Pajama Game.
