I saw the original West End production, which was like 15 years ago. It was sensational! The audience loved it; it got the Olivier for Best Musical; the CD came out and was very, very popular.
Then they brought it to New York, and I was so thrilled. I think I was THE FIRST person to call for tickets. (I'm serious.)
HOWEVER, the NY production was pretty lousy. They changed quite a bit from the London production and made it less campy and, oh I don't know, I've blocked it out really well. (I even forgot I ever saw it in NYC until your post.)
It could be a very fun show to do, I imagine, but it has to maintain a level of silliness AND, at the same time, have actors who can sing, play instruments and do Shakespeare justice.
Anyway, that's just my opinion. Hope it helped.
