Richard Easton Has Heart Attack During Utopia

http://www.talkinbroadway.com/allthatchat/d.php?id=317718

From that poster, it seems Richard Easton collapsed about an hour into the play.

Hope he's alright!

"One hour into the play Richard Easton collapsed as he was exiting stage right. It looked like a heart attack. His left side went numb as he left the stage, he seemed to lose all movement on the left side of his body, skipping a few steps and then falling hard. Ethen Hawke and Martha Plimpton ran to him immediately. Martha shouted, "Does anyone know CPR!" It took quite some time for them to get him on the stretcher and to the hospital. They did not give us any news as we were ushered out of the theatre. The play was going very well, too. A true tragedy, and shocking to hear some of the inane comments said by the audience (ie. "Why did he fall? It seems so stagey.") This was after we all knew what was going on!"

I always fantasize (not in a positive way) something like this happening. That's awful! I wish him a very speedy recovery!

Seems more like a stroke than a heart attack, God forbid.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

My God...that's awful. The same thing just happened in Chicago to the guy playing Hockstader in a production of Gore Vidal's The Best Man. I hope Mr. Easton will be okay.

Oh dear, I hope he is ok...

I did a news search and couldn't come up with a mention. Can anybody confirm?

It did happen in Chicago two weeks ago, as The Distinctive Baritone said:

"Veteran Chicago actor Gene Janson died Wednesday after slumping over onstage during a matinee of Remy Bumppo Theatre's "The Best Man."

The only other sort-of confirmation found is at Martha Plimpton's Myspace, where she's put up a photo of him: http://myspace.com/marthaplimpton

Not that the news is in doubt, just puzzled by the lack of reports. In any case, get well soon Mr Easton.

It's in today's NY Times, on page B4 of the Metro Section.

Paraphrasing:
He collapsed on stage at the end of the first act.

Currently in conscious and stable condition at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital undergoing tests.

Understudy David Manis going on tonight.

The actors were told that it was a cardiac event.
