I agree with whichever post said you just sort of wait by the box office/lines and they shuffle you right into the mix. That's generally what I do. Last time I went to NEWSIES, they had a long line for the main doors that open to the long hallway. However, there were far fewer people in line by the other doors (to the right if you're facing the box office, where the standby line was waiting). They tore tickets for the performance, which seemed to be a slow process.

When I saw WICKED on Saturday, it startde about 8 minutes late or so.

They all call me a troll. Ok, call me a troll. If I stand on my own, so be it.

Every show I've seen has started close to 9 minutes late. What was the first show on Broadway that started using the electronic ticket scanning method?

I count on shows starting 10 minutes late. In fact if a show is close to 3 hours and needs to end before 11 and OT, they make a big deal about the show starting on time.
The only ones I can remember every starting at 8 are Les Miz and Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf. The latter at the Ahmanson in LA and the curtain went up promptly at 8.

In NYC, I generally see on scanner with a huge line and a second door with someone begging someone to come to them that we just walk over.

I saw the matinee this past Wednesday and showed up 30 minutes prior to curtain and the line was all the way around the block. Instead of getting in the line I hung out on the other side and took pictures of the marquee and signs. As soon as people were starting to be let in I just went in through the right like several other people did. Didn't have to wait in the long line and was one of the first ones in the theatre. So moral of the story here is don't wait in that ridiculous line.
