He's actually "rooting for her" now????

Wow, with Reidel on her side, Christina might be a force to be reckoned with.
So it seems. He's apparently admitting he was too quick to be so harsh on her rehearsal performance. Who ever thought they would see the day?
Was he there Monday night?
For one thing, he seems right about the possible Denzel snub. With his reviews, and his competition this year, it seems like many others are closer in the running than he. Though I could lose Irwin from that "nomination lock" list. His performance just irked me. And not in a good way.
So is Christina a possible nominee now? (Assuming her injury doesn't stop her)

I'd say its between her and Victoria Clark for the WIN!
If she gets critical support, I think she could beat Clark for a few reasons: 1.) Light in the Piazza has not been as well-received as expected. 2.) Celebritycelebritycelebrity 3.) Comeback-kid story. 4.) Celebritycelebritycelebrity.
Victoria Clark has been widely recognized as the best thing about Piazza, but she won't get as much press as Applegate. And if Applegate is recognized as the "best part of Sweet Charity," well then, who knows.
I have no preference, haven't seen either performance yet, but just wanted to point out some of those influences.
But what about Sutton? Different category?
Applegate will get a few love letters for being a comeback kid but her performance is in no way going to get the absolute love letters critics like Ben Brantley just showered on Clark.
Sutton is also up for lead but she's very much an underdog due to the quality of that show.
Of all the women on Broadway this year, Clark is working with the absolute best-written material character-wise and that's going to be the difference.
Oh Puhleeze - If Christina Applegate is even in the running, the race will still be between SUTTON FOSTER & VICTORIA CLARK! And hopefully Foster will TRUMP!

Foster's reviews were a bit mixed, and the reviews of her show were extremely mixed, to put it kindly. Also, she's young and already has a very recent Tony win under her belt. That counts against her.
Since when do "love letters" guarantee a lock for this award? I recall a few people receiving much better notices than Idina last year.

Yes, but are any of this year's female nominees in a box office sensation like Wicked? Spamalot's only woman is in the Supporting Actress category, and if Spelling Bee turns out to be a smash, the same will apply there.
No, I was just saying that like with all the catagories, great reviews don't always count for a whole lot.
The nominees for Best Actress, almost suredly will fall this way
Sutton Foster
Victoria Clark
Christina Applegate
Sherie Rene Scott
I'm honestly blanking on any kind of possible 5th nominee unless they go with Kelli O'Hara as a lead.
And out of those nominees, the award's Vickie's.

You're right, of course- politics will always play a role- but I think the line between reviews and awards is more direct in the case of acting than in that of Best Musical, for example.
Erin Dilly could sneak in there as well, although she has no chance of winning.
Sutton Foster will not win. She's not even a serious contender. Its absolutely between Clark and Applegate.
I don't know - Sutton is excellent and carries a so-so show. Wasn't Hugh Jackman a runaway winner carrying what the critics thought was a so-so show? I'd bet on Sutton right now, even with a Tony win already under her belt.
Not a chance. She'd have to run a brilliant campaign to grab that award. And since I believe she's a Democrat, there's simply no chance of her running a good campaign.
Hmm, well, since Cheno's not campaigning this year, there's no chance that Karl Rove will be "suggesting" that Cherry Jones is gay and would Tony voters really want to let a homo win. Of course, he probably takes on look at Kathleen Turner and sends out the same form letter.
Still say it's a three-way race with Sutton, Christina and Victoria with Victoria having ample lead.
I think we're going to witness Riedel make a push for Applegate to win the award. And it will be interesting to see just what kind of power he has.

There's no way you can compare Foster's reviews to Jackman's, except maybe among her fangirls on this board.
Well, he certainly pushed for Bernadette to lose, so I can believe he would push for a particular winner.
And I'm surprised he's already anointing James Earl Jones (now, granted, the man is a god, but still), especially in the light of riveting NEW creations by Brian F. O'Byrne and Billy "Hunka hunka burnin' actor" Crudup.
