Riedel on Follies from the West End and Thomas Meehan

Follies is a brilliant show but it's never been a money-maker. I know virtually everything in London gets transfer talk nowadays, but I'd be highly surprised if anyone thought it was a good idea to bring this over. Especially since the last money-losing revival was only 6 years ago.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Follies is one of my favorite musicals but this seems like a bad idea. Unless a non-profit wanted to produce it. That being said, I'd never say no to a new production.

I can't believe that last revival was already 6 years ago!

A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

The sets, the costumes, the cast size, the orchestra size... producing Follies takes a boatload of money. It would have to run for years to recoup. Looking back, I'm surprised the 2011 revival even happened (surprised, but not upset). As much as I would love for this to transfer, it's not gonna happen.
