It's really unbelievable...
This has to sting..."including a few Tony voters who told me the other night that, even though they will evaluate “Comet” on its artistic merits, they could never vote for a show produced by the Kagans."

It would be the very first time that a Tony voter was influenced by politics and not merely the art on stage.

It's not a punishment to the show. The individual creative and performer categories would be unaffected. Best Musical is an award that goes to the producers. Why award the Kagans for poor producing choices? They brought negative press to their production and angered their coproducers and investors. That's not good producing and that behavior doesn't deserve a trophy.

It just will remain to be seen if Tony voters will be willing to nominate / award the show's acting, writing, or design- which can be used to boost the show's- and thereby the Kagans'- success.

From what I gather, there are plenty of off-stage feuds between rival producers. It's all politics. Maybe there are some who won't vote for tNatasha Pierre deliberately because of the Kagans involvement, but I suspect this controversy will be long ago, very old news by spring. As Hogans points out, though, this is just Riedel stirring the pot.

There are also a great many people who vote for the Tony Awards who aren't thinking about the character of the individual producers at the helm. I doubt the out of town road presenters, for example are going to care.

Technically, yes. Realistically, the prestige of the award is one of the greatest marketing tools in the business (not to mention the historical legacy value) and the award is not titled "Best Producer of a Musical". I mean, how many people do you hear whining Best Musical should have gone to David Merrick and Leland Heyward in 1960? Or that Harold Prince deserved to win Best Musical in 1972? Sure, the "Winner of ___ Tony Awards!" tag is helpful for many shows, but let's not kid ourselves, here.
