Actor can't take a few days off? Won a Tony Sunday night after going all out for four months in an arduous role, took Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday afternoon (no perf) for her own mental health Nothin' wrong with that.
It'd be a bigger problem if it were a Saturday.
All's I gotta say: between this thread and WithoutATrace's "angry" message to Karen Olivo, I've had some great laughs this morning.
Thanks.

As I said, my problem was not with Alice taking the night off. Was I disappointed, yes, but I do not hold her responsible for anything or feel anger at her.
My problem, and what made me angry, was with the unwillingness of the box office staff to follow the house manager's instructions to do direct exchanges without refunding first.
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!

Posted: 6/10/09 at 8:32amI wonder if Ripley will pull a LaChanze: win the Tony then regularly miss performances. As she's shredding her voice she'd have good reason to.

I have to agree that the statement that Ripley's absence was the decision of the creative team makes no sense. It's been known for months that Kyle was going to start today; one would think they would plan accordingly. Also, Kyle has been a replacement/understudy in at least 2 other Broadway shows -- it's not like he's never been on stage before and needs someone to hold his hand.
The only thing I can think of is that someone said to Jessica something like, "You're going to have to go on tonight because Alice isn't up to it; besides, this is Kyle's first night and it will be easier for him if you go on with him, so don't be nervous about it -- it will be fine." And somehow this became what was said at the stage door.

Couldn't agree more.
And people on this thread need to leave Donna Murphy the f*ck alone

...so apparently everyone on this board was there last night...
i was also there and i have to say that Jessica was AMAZING. i went with my sister-in-law, who is a psychology teacher, and she commented that, although everything in the show wasnt completely accurate, Jessica's performance was a very good representation of what someone with that disorder acts like.
I also want to comfirm that there were tears, the chemistry between Jessica and J. Robert was there and actually quite striking.
Kyle Dean Massey was good. I prefer Aaron's voice, but that's me... His "I'm Alive" and "I am the one (Reprise)" were both very strong moments.
I had a great time and although i was a little disppointed at first that Alice Ripley was out, I was not disappointed.
Apparently some people should read Seth Rudetsky's article in Playbill and deal.

I'd just like to interrupt the rehashing of the same basic points in this thread for a minute and thank Musicinmymind for a great post. I enjoyed reading it and I have so been there; walking around town counting the minutes til it's time to get to the theater to see a show I'm dying to see.
And now back to our regularly scheduled recycling:

Posted: 6/10/09 at 11:56pmI was of thinking of this today... was it posted so early in the day (4:30ish) that Alice wasn't going to be going on? That was a mistake on the part of the theatre if that's the case. If they posted it around 6/6:30 they might not have had as many people wanting refunds.

Please Review last night's show! How where Alice and Kyle together?
Now Megan (sp?) is the only understudy that hasn't gone on yet!
