Did anyone catch her performance as "Norma D" when she subbed for Petula Clark?
I saw Petula in London and wish I had seen Rita instead.
I saw SUNSET BLVD. in NY with some British Actress who had originally done it in London--someone please help with name.
I thought show dragged--but its definitely a star vehicle and maybe I saw it with the wrong one.
Elaine Paige?
Elaine Paige Indeed. Thanks Glebb!
(Wasn't she original West End Evita?)
I think so. I used to have the original concept (pre West End) recording of EVITA too. Can't remember that woman's name.

The concept album "Eva" was Julie Covington. She can be heard on ALW's "Premiere Collection" album one. Personally, her DCFMA wasn't very powerful as say Paige or LuPone.
Last time I saw Rita Moreno was at a preview of Gantry
Glebb, That was Julie Convington.
That's her name. No, not very much power in that voice. Sort of hippie sounding.
The WHOLE concept album of EVITA sounded bizarre.
It sounded like martians trying to write a musical.
Maybe Flower Child is a better description.
I saw Elaine Paige's opening performance here in NY and it was amazing - the crowd was up on its feet the moment she stepped on stage and it was a love affair from that moment on - she was truly amazing in the role.
How does Rita manage with some of those vocals in SUNSET BLVD.? (Pretty high range.)
[She was dubbed in WEST SIDE STORY film.]
but in West Side Story - the parts that were dubbed were the legit parts - the stuff she'd be singing high in Sunset would have a more belty, chesty mix (just listen to Glenn Close butcher those high notes if you want to hear bad singing...she turns the word ME into MAY because of the closed vowel being so high and pinched)

redhot, Elaine Paige did the same thing with the last word of "With One Look" ('me' --> 'may') and she's a more experienced singer than Glenn Close!
sant - she didn't do that the night I saw her - she sang it beautifully. I don't know what performance you saw.
Question about Rita. Did she do her own singing in KING AND I?
Cause that stuff was pretty legit. I cannot to this day imagine why they would dub her in WSS. She's got a terrific voice.

I've never seen Sunset Boulevard - the musical. Unfortunately.
Just listen to her recording of "With One Look" on her Encore! cd and there it is.
well perhaps she had a bad day in the recording studio (happens to the best of us) but in her live performance she sang it the way it SHOULD be sung - the word was clearly ME and not MAY.
robbiej,
Yes, Rita was dubbed in THE KING AND I. Not sure by whom.
One reason she was dubbed in WEST SIDE STORY (by Betty Wand) is because Hollywood Producers demand 'PERFECTION'--including perfect vocalizing with no room for error.
Heck, Hollywood starting experimenting with dubbing techniques almost immediately after Sound arrived.
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN can be viewed almost as a semi-documentary.
how long was Rita in Sunset, anyways?
