It's true!!!! The great filmmaker, Robert Altman, director of such movies as MASH and Nashville is dead at 81. The cause of death has not been determined.
Incidentally, the exclamation points are out of shock and not out of celebration. I am truly shocked that he is dead.

May flights of Angels . . .
I got to see his staging of MacTeague at the Lyric Opera - astonishing.
He got career best film performances out of people like Bud Cort, Shelley Duvall (a Cannes Best Actress winner for 3 Women), Sally Kellerman, Barbara Harris and Tom Waits.
He championed Alan Rudolph.
If you haven't seen gems like Streamers, O.C. and Stiggs, Health, A Wedding or Thieves Like Us, hie thee to the video store.
It is unlikely his ilk will be seen again.

Thank you for changing that heading. It was totally jarring.
Those who followed his work were very much aware that he has been ailing for quite some time, so this really wasn't unexpected. We knew it was very close.
Same with Bob Fosse's passing -- it really wasn't a surprise to anyone when he passed away suddenly. Most were actually surprised he lived as long as he did.
My 2 favorite 'Bobs'. RIP.

He never got the recognition he deserved?
Apparently you weren't watching last year's Academy Awards.
Oy!

Posted: 11/21/06 at 8:45pmCould you stop with the tactless exclamation points and just change your title in the original post, Mattbrain? Don't be obnoxious about it, it looks tacky and should be fixed.

Posted: 11/21/06 at 10:03pmI had some friends over to watch Nashville tonight, which is still one of the great movie musicals. And those of you who saw Prarie Home Companion (which has turned out to be his last movie) got to see Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin sing some wonderful duets. He was one of the greats, and I miss him already.

Ok, did you people not read the second part of my post. Yeesh!!! A guy can't illustrate his shock through the use of exclamation points?
It's a mean, nasty, online theatre loving community.

Thanks.
