So is it just me, or has anyone else noticed the amount of musicals that are set in the 40s, 50s, 60s, etc. and are all Rock n Roll based. (Grease, Movin' Out, Cry-Baby, etc.) Does it bug anyone else too? I guess to me Broadway is about a story that has "show-tune" type music. If I wanted to listen to Rock n Roll, I'd go to a concert. I'm not trying the be prejudice...but does anyone else feel the same way I do? Maybe I'm just crazy...
not crazy... just extremely limited in your thought. My guess is that you think Sondheim is "show-tune" type music, but his music was a radical departure from R&H. Stagnant art ceases to have anything to say for very long.
if it's on Broadway, it's a "musical"
whether it is THE GOSPEL AT COLONAS or PASSING STRANGE or THE TIMES, THEY ARE A CHANGIN' ... it's still a Broadway Musical. it may use different forms of music but still the same thing. not a concert.

I love the Rock and Roll musicals as long as it is not nasty hard rock lol

There isn't a set musical form...the standard's for musical theatre in the golden age is different from what there is today. Theatrical music sounds different in all decades.

Just let me hear some of that
Rock and roll music
Any old way you choose it
It's got a back beat, you can't lose it
Any old time you use it
It's gotta be rock and roll music

You betta work TooDarnHot for that Gospel at Colonus shout out!!!!!!!
I'm living for you! That is my show!!!
I think it's a trend that's getting big on Broadway but to say that you hate it and it doesn't have a 'broadway' sound is really limiting yourself. Keep an open mind, there's a huge difference in a musical and a rock show, starting with the seating, and the folks in those seats... And, the people onstage and there intentions... You know, all that stuff.
