re: Rock of Ages

Here is a link to some of the lead casting:

https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Canadian_Cast_Announced_for_ROCK_OF_AGES_Toronto_Begins_April_20_20091215

From Maria to Sherrie...Elicia MacKenzie is back on King Street, and Yvan Pedneault is leaving Queen behind for ROA.

I don't know about this casting. Could they not find anyone else? I mean, I liked Elicia in The Sound of Music...I don't know...I'm not going to judge anymore until I see it.

re: Rock of Ages

This was a chance for Mirvish to cast some big names as the leads. Looks like that didn't happen. Needless to say, my excitement for this show just went down even further.

re: Rock of Ages

Never saw Sound of Music so can't comment on Elicia MacKenzie as a cast choice, but I'm super excited about seeing Yvan again as a male lead. He was amazing in We Will Rock You.
Am also happy to see David Keeley again.

re: Rock of Ages

I am really excited for Elicia, I think it is a great chance for her to show more of the talent she has inside that the mainstream audience may not know she has.. And to be lucky enough at this early in her career to break type casting is even better for her! I think she will shine in this show..

As for Yvan,I am sadened that it is the same thing we already saw from him. And this character is from Detriot, so there is no room for a french accent.. The characters are very close to being the same..the complete opposite, to Elicia, sadly it seems He has been type casted...

I think it could be really great though... Im excited for what Elicia will bring to the table, just a bit sadened it might be the same for Yvan.. Which might be great for some Rock you Fans, but its a bit cut and paste!

re: Rock of Ages

Yvan has a terrific voice and a very likable stage presence, and I'm happy he's getting a lead role in ROA. I was never a big Elicia fan, but I suppose I'll give her a chance in ROA.

This wasn't a show I was keen to see, but hearing Yvan Pedneault sing Don't Stop Believin' should be worth it.

re: Rock of Ages

I find this casting to be a tad unoriginal. They are both good singers - but it just feels weird to me to have the 2 leads of previous shows as new leads in another.

Fairly unoriginal.

Doesn't matter - I hated ROA on Broadway anyways. lol...

re: Rock of Ages

Saw the Wednesday night preview. The show is a crowd-pleaser, but not as good as I had hoped. Kind of like We Will Rock You with less-good songs. Flimsy plot, although I suppose it's better than the brain-dead book of WWRY.

Band and cast is good, with mostly strong singing (an obscenely flat "Motoring..." by ensemble in "Sister Christian" being the glaring exception Please fix that bum note.)

I felt Elicia MacKenzie was a bit weak, though, esp. when singing with Yvan Pednealt, who was in fine voice (as expected). Ex-Canadian Idol finalist Aaron Walpole (Lonny) and Cody Scott Lancaster (Franz) were both très funny.

The set and costumes weren't anything special, but I liked the lighting. Avoid sitting on the far left or right sides (esp. in the upper balcony--where I was), as parts of the stage will be obscured (rear video screen and action on extreme left and right sides of stage). The front row lottery tickets would be a good location, I imagine.

Given that the preview performances are sold out and, as mentioned, the show is a crowd pleaser, one can expect a healthy run.

re: Rock of Ages

I saw the Saturday afternoon show and I enjoyed it. It was certainly fluffy, and the story was pretty weak but it's fun and it looks like the actors are having fun with it. They create a rock show atmosphere by handing out fake lighters to the audience (they're flashlights) and there's a bit of audience involvement.

A fun afternoon!

If given the chance, would you rather see the Mirvish production, or current Broadway production?

re: Rock of Ages

Went the first Saturday of previews and shockingly won the lottery (there were quite a few people there, too!). I personally LOVED the show. Mind you, I have a soft spot for 80's rock. I thought the show had humour, heart, talent and great music. The cast did a fantastic job. Elicia surprised me, just because it was such a different show to SoM. I loved Yvan in WWRY, and he sounded even better in this show. Man, that guy can SING!

In terms of the plot, it is a little weak, but I felt it didn't seem as strung together as WWRY. Really, I went to have a good time and I got it.

I actually already want to see it again.

re: Rock of Ages

Went to Rock of Ages with my husband last weekend. We both LOVED it. Some of the humour was a bit more crude than I like and the music was loud...but that was the 80s. The cast is amazing. I'm already an Yvan fan from WWRY and he was fantastic here as well. I really like Elicia as well. I'm also a david Keeley fan and he was great as always...and the guy that played Lonny was well cast. Would see it again if it was here longer. Great show!
We got the cast recording and we both wish that they would make one of the Toronto production (which they never do).

re: Rock of Ages

Has anybody gone to Rock of Ages for the Rush Lottery?
If you have and you sat in the front row, could you see a lot or was it highly obstructed? Same with the box seats. I want to go with my son and he is Four foot Ten.
Thanks

re: Rock of Ages

I won the lottery. We were pulled towards the end so ended up in boxes. I couldn't see anything that happened on our side of the stage (or anything that happened on the screen). And the way the box was set up, the people sitting behind us couldn't see very well (the seats are right behind eachother and the back ones are not raised above the front). Luckily the seats move and as a group we all repositioned so that the folks behind us could somewhat see (and I'm only 5' 2" so I'm not tall either!).

From what I could see, the front row did not look obstructed at all. I'm fairly certain they saw more of the show than we did. The only problem with the lottery is that you can end up in either space. It all depends when your name is pulled.

re: Rock of Ages

Thanks. I think I am gonna instead buy tickets ahead of time.

re: Rock of Ages

How busy did you find the lottery? I'm thinking of going tomorrow (Sunday afternoon) and trying it but not sure if its worth getting out there early for the lottery or just waiting until later in the summer.

Thanks.

*Update* Almost everyone who was there won the lottery. Ended up in the first row and the seats were great. However, the people who won after us wnded up in the box seats the view was definitely obstructed.

Overall show was fun - the songs and music were amazing but the story was even weaker than I anticipated. Yvan looked like he was going through the paces for a lot of it but his voice sounded amazing. Aaron Walpole and the guy who play Franz were the highlights.
