He has recently denied rumours that he would be taking over King Arthur in Spamalot. Incidentally.
Zachary Levi (star of the NBC sitcom "Chuck") turned down the role of Dr. Frankenstein as well.
Sills is amazing, and would have been perfect for this part !!!
(IMHO) !
NEED him back in a starring role on Bway !!!
I hope this Leading Man In a New Musical CURSE does not affect the ENTIRE SEASON!!! Be careful, Sean Palmer, Lin Manuel Miranda, and Harvey Fierstein/ Tom Wopat/ Matt Cavenaugh!

I'm pretty sure Randy Quaid is available. Stroman could take his wife in a brawl anyday.
I love me some Roger Bart and hope he makes a full recovery in a timely manner, but if we're fantasizing over replacements: Brian d'Arcy James.
"Stroman could take his wife in a brawl anyday."
Hell yeah she could! She's a tough lady!

He would be AMAZING!!!!!!!!
Didn't Brian do the workshop? He was definitely talked about for the role.

This is only speculation on my part, but Brian may be too big a presence now to have been interested in doing what is a thankless role -- the others get the big laughs (at least at the performance I attended. That's why I wasn't particularly upset when Bart was out of the performance.
I don't want Brian to do it if I can't be there to see it! :P

I don't know, but to me, Bart (who's a Tony winner remember) is if anything a bigger "presence" than D'Arcy James (who just prior to APPLE TREE agreed to play a very tiny role in THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE). And with his film roles and recurring role on Desperate Housewives, Bart is a much bigger name in the industry than D'Arcy James (who's basically only known to theatre fans) at this point.

1. I don't understand why everyone's writing Roger Bart off.
2. I'm with Margo...on what planet are Brian d'Arcy James, Zach Levi, or Doug Sills better known than Roger Bart?
The show currently stars "Oh, I know him! The creepy pharmacist from Desperate Housewives." As opposed to "Oh, this guy was in The Scarlet Pimpernel. What's that?"
Yankeefan,
It's really not clear who in this thread you would be addressing, but I never implied that Douglas Sills is a bigger name. In fact, what I stated was that since they had decided NOT to cast a "name", he would have been a perfect choice for the role. He's an incredible performer and this role would fit him like a glove. That's what I was adding to this thread. I am fully aware that mainstream audiences wouldn't know him from Adam.
Reports say that Bart has a herniated disc (otherwise known as a "slipped disc"). These types of injuries are tough to guess when it comes to predicting how long they will take to heal. If anyone suggests that this is somehow suspect, I would wonder exactly what kind of conspiracy they might imagine.
McCormack was, by all accounts, auditioned during the casting process and either refused the role or they felt he was not right for the role. As for any rumors that Esparza was considered, I suppose they may be valid, but I don't see him in that role. Just my opinion.
I love Roger Bart. I thought he was a fabulous Frederick Frankenstein, and I wish him a speedy and full recovery.

I never implied that Sills was a bigger name either (as far as Broadway goes) than Bart.
I just think (and have always thought) that Sills would be better suited for the role ( I think that he is funnier than Bart, and although I am not that familiar with the score, he has a much better voice.
Doug Sills certainly chewed up the scenery in Little Shop, he might be just right for Brooks' romp through Transylvania.
Loved him in "Little Shop...." !!!
He was a riot playing the multiple roles !
That's what I was thinking. That maniacal dentist was not unlike Gene Wilder's Dr. Frankenstein when he went nuts in the lab!
First of all..
"On what planet is Matthew Broderick a "force"?"
THANK YOU.
Secondly...
"I don't know why everyone's writing Roger Bart off."
THANK YOU AGAIN.

Who? Bart or Izzard?
And Izzard, really? He's been in LA for awhile now working on his standup, getting ready to tour again. I'd be surprised to see him put that off.
(Although I'm always looking for any excuse to see Izzard again0

Actually I've heard that Izzard is busy about to start filming the second season of his series "The Riches."
