I've spent some good time with her, but never worked for or with her. That being said, she is a very nice person.

I have heard the some of the same things about working with her from select individuals (who are equally as notorious for being difficult), but she is a box office draw, so attention must be paid. For my money, she's great. Her Norma Desmond was my favorite of the three I saw.

Let's stay on topic. I think she would be fabulous in Candide.

(Oh and DD, she's hired just as much as any other "Diva" save Audra. Where's Patti right now? Still selling her spoons on EBay?)

I spent an Afternoon with Betty Buckley a few years back as she was promoting one of her albums and I found her to be utterly delightful. It was not the best of situations, but BB was unrelentingly pleasant and never showed a glimpse of her legendary Diva Behaviour. We spent a lot of time discussing "Tender Mercies" and her film & recording career.

If you're looking for a good rental on your next trip to the video store, check out "Tender Mercies". Oscar-worthy work from Robert Duvall and Betty as his bitter ex-wife and country singer. Great score, also.

Where's Patti? Doing far more work in concerts such as Candide, Passion and the annual Sondheim show at Ravinia as well as touring Matters of the Heart. Patti's been working far more than Betty.

Betty was by far the best Norma I saw in Sunset Boulevard and I would love to see more of her. Even if she is a difficult diva, it never stopped other difficult divas from getting work either, so I'm not so sure that is the problem. It could be that she doesn't want to go back to doing eight shows a week or maybe that there hasn't been a show on Broadway in a while that suited her or that she was interested in. I would love to see her as Mama Rose (though she has played it on Broadway before). I don't know if she's played it before, but I also think she would be a good Anna in The King and I, Joanne in Company, Miss Hannigan in Annie, Mona in Whorehouse (she is from Texas, after all), Charlotte in Falsettos, Mrs. Johnstone in Blood Brothers, Pennywise in Urinetown or Nancy in Oliver. Call me crazy, but I also think she could tackle Callas in Master Class.

Yes, she's very pleasant if you want to sit around all day and talk about how great she is. But that's not how you deal with a person on a daily basis - in everyday situations, she's quite different.

And yes, she was truly amazing in Tender Mercies and it's a travesty that she was not nominated.

I know for a fact. my knowledge of her is all first-hand. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt as well.

I would love to see Betty as Mrs. Lovett. She would be phenomenal!!!!! I would have loved to see her do the Witch in Into the Woods, but she might be a little too old for it now. Oh well.

I think Betty is phenomenal, and I don't care is she is a "diva" and "difficult to work with" or "insane". I would pay anything to see her on Broadway again!

Cheers,

The Balladeer

Encores really really needs to do a production of Carrie with Betty as Margaret. I would attend every performance...seriously.

She was supposed to play the Witch in Into the Woods and then was fired. I doubt she would ever be allowed to play that role again (even though she's recorded "Children Will Listen" since).
