Everyone keeps saying of Bernadette's performance, "she acted the **** out of the role" and I'll agree on that, but most of you mean it as a compliment. She did act the **** out of the role. Man, I have never seen an actor working so damn hard to try to tear through herself to find that role deep down inside. She worked her a$$ off up there. But to no avail. As Brantley put it, this is a role she was not born to play. Bernadette is an acting and singing legend and there is no debate as to that. But all of the acting and singing skills in the world--for this actress--would never be enough to pull off this role.

The problem with Bernadette Peters is that, even at her age, she usually comes across as a child dressed up in her mother's clothing. She didn't start out that way but somewhere along the line took a wrong turn. I see Kristin Chenoweth on the same road.

Agreed. She has yet to win acclaim playing a serious adult role as an aged adult. She is 50+ and GYPSY was an attempt to try to fit a type of role that she has been playing against for years.

The Mendes GYPSY was incredibly poorly cast except for Peters and the strippers, so she had a harder row to hoe than Daly, who was surrounded by the perfect company.

Not that I don't agree about the casting, but I think the cheif weakness was Mendes's direction. He could have brought out in Tammy Blanchard and John Dossett what was necessary to find the heart in their roles, but it seems like most of his character coaching time was spent on Bernadette, because everyone else did very much come across as a blank slate. It looks like the other actors were just told to find their own way. So you can't totally blame them.

I saw Peters in December of 2003, and she was in perfect voice. Next to Natasha Richardson in Streetcar, I have yet to see anything so brilliant on any stage.

After seeing Peters in Annie Get Your Gun, I'm not sure I'd walk into a theatre where she was playing re: Rose's Turn (Bernadette Tonys)

My problem with Peters is, I find her to be a pretty great actress/stage personality. BUT her singing voice is so shrill. It's been like that since her early days. It's just not a pleasant voice to listen to. Ofcourse she can hold a tune wonderfully, but I just don't enjoy her tone, etc.

I don't know, this all just confirms in my mind, that Patti LuPone will probally end up as the best Rose, and sadly we won't all see it. She will sing the score wonderfully, and will definitely act the hell out of it. She will sing it as strong as Merman, and will act it as strong as Daly/Lansbury. This is why she will be the perfect Rose. She will have both qualities, opposed to the Roses who have either the acting, or the singing.

To each their own ljay.

I don't discredit you in anyway.

But, I don't find Peter's shrill at all. I think she has a signature voice, yes. But I get great pleasure out of listening to her sing.

Of all the Rose's I've seen...she is, without a doubt, the best.

I think one of the greatest things about Bernadette's vocals during Rose's Turn was that she had the emotion vocally. I don't think it is approriate to belt the **** out of that song.

I just feel like Bernadette finally gave Momma Rose the mental break down that actually occurs.

i HATE Tyne's i saw it last night and i was just disgusted and wanted to know what the hell she was thinking.

I happen to be a huge fan of Peters' voice. But I know it's a love-it-or-hate-it kind of voice, like Buckley's, which a lot of people (myself included) find to be quite shrill, while others think it's beautiful.

She sings pretty well, I like her voice. I think she has the best moves of anyone I've seen play Rose.

I didn't see the show with her in it--But that is the only Tony performance I have ever seen that gave me chills. If she can be THAT good in 3+ minutes I can't even imagine the power of the full performance.
