Either way, ljay. This is one of the first time's I have to disagree with you.
Usually, I commend your opinion, but this time I have to say Bernadette was in full form that night.
Her vocals were top notch that night. She poured her heart and soul into that performance and brought all of Radio City to it's feet. Her emotions are so powerful that it consumes her. The song doesn't need to be sung with flawless vocals. The beauty of "Rose's Turn" is two-fold. You need to give it power and sing it...but you also need to show your heart breaking with every word. If you deliver a vocally stunning performance with no emotion it's just not all there. You need to convey how the world has chewed you up and spat you out. Her tears and "choking-up" are, in my opinion, the mark of an actress who truly understands her part.
Bernadette's Rose remains to be the single greatest female performance I have ever witnessed.

I respect your opinion Foa. I just really don't understand why everyone raves about this performance. (Tonys)
I'd take Bette's version or Tyne's over this anyday.

Posted: 5/31/06 at 9:51pmFOAnatic I couldn't agree with you more. She gave probably one of the most inspiring performances I've ever witnessed on a stage. And the night of the Tonys she just embodied Rose flawlessly.

Posted: 5/31/06 at 9:59pmBernadette's intepretation was different from Bette's, which I think is wonderful. I do love it though, because her face alone tells you so much. She has a different emotion behind it, I think, and I like that. I saw this about 2 weeks ago, and it's absolutely amazing.

Posted: 5/31/06 at 10:10pmSee Bernadette sold the emotion and acted the **** out of it while Bette sang it very well.

Posted: 5/31/06 at 10:14pmI was actually at the tony awards that year. Her performance brought tears to my eyes. Probably the best live performance of one song I have ever seen.

Hee-hee. I love edited threads. That's how you end up with exchanges like this:

folkyboy - fun!
And now, back to your regularly scheduled topic.

Posted: 5/31/06 at 10:22pmIt is amazing to me how much better the Tony performance is than the preview performance that I saw a part of. I don't know if that's growing into the part over time, or just day-to-day variability in performance, but the difference is remarkable.

Posted: 5/31/06 at 10:36pmmikem-she was rather sick during previews. I saw the show twice, once in previews and again just a few weeks before the Tonys. During previews she was obviously struggling with some vocals (I could actually see a Vitamin C, or whatever in her mouth while she performed) but she acted the **** out of the role. When I saw her again, post-sickness, her vocals were flawless and acting even better. She gave one of the best performances I've ever seen. I cried during Rose's Turn and during the scene with Louise right before it. Just marvelous.

I'm glad I'm not alone on this, Altergo.
While I like the emotion Bernie brings the song, I still find her vocals not enough for the number. Her voice may be in top notch shape here, but it's ultimately too weak for this number. For instance, Merman and Bette completely had the vocal power to nail the number, especially the ending. Tyne didn't have the best voice but acted the sh*t out of the song, plus when she shouts "for me" at the end, it completely makes up for any vocal weakness she may have had. I think LuPone will fall under the the Merman and Bette category, with a brilliant and powerful vocal performance for this number. I don't see her getting as emotional as Bernie though. It just wouldn't work for LuPone.

I thought Bernadette Peters actually brought a much-needed vulnerability to Rose, she completely broke down during Rose's Turn, which was a rather different take.
I agree that this wouldn't work for LuPone, I expect her Rose to be rather implacccable in a way, sensual and vulnerable when needed, but ultimately larger-than-life like only LuPone can do it.

You are kinda contradicting yourself... Bernadette Peters acting in the role was amazing... not to mention an entirely new take on the role... she was absolutely amazing. If you think her vocals are underpowered that's your opinion obviously... I think you are incorrect... but you are entitled... but I think her acting in the role is unassailable... most particular in that Tony performance. It just seems like you don't like the IDEA of Bernadette Peters in the role... well that's my opinion anyway.

Posted: 6/1/06 at 1:32amOk, I watched both Bette and Bernadette, and I have to say, I like Bernadette's better. While Bette sounded great, I really felt the emotion with Bernadette. However, I can see why people didn't like the performance.
