"Nudity and foul language have been on the stage for ages, as has the coming of age story, including sex."
If that's all you saw in the production, then that is your problem. What I saw was a story told in a way that hasn't quite been done so before.

Sorry to sound crass but, no duh. I has bee stated MANY times that the songs are inner monolouges of the character. They are not there to movie the plot along.
The intent doesn't make them any less unbearable. As wickedfan stated, it's a gimmick that becomes tiring after the first few numbers.

Hmm...so that means that they reverted back to musicals pre-OKLAHOMA when they had songs that didn't move the plot along. That's really progressive there!
No. Reverting back to pre-OKLAHOMA and pre-SHOW BOAT type songs would be songs that have nothing to do with the show whatsoever.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

People have asked why the lyrics are horrible. Here are some taken directly from the album booklet:
"The thing that sucks-okay-for me,
A thousand bucks, I'm, like, scott-free.
And I mean, please...That's all I need.
Get real Jose, by now you know the score."
"In the midst of this nothing, this miss of
a life,
Still, there's this one thing- just to see
you go by.
It's almost like lovin'-sad as that is.
May not be cool, but it's so where I live."
"Come, cream away the bliss,
Travel the world within my lips,
Fondle the pearl of your distant dreams...
Haven't you heard the word of your body?"

Well I happen to love those My Junk lyrics you posted. Slant rhymes are used in rock ALL the time. This is a rock show. Period. JV- hate to break it to you but rosie doesn't just believe SA will win, she wants it to win. She loves Grey Gardens, I'm sure, as well. Doesn't mean she loves SA any less. Just because people disagree with you doesn't mean they're wrong. Responding with- what are you talking about, are you crazy!!?? etc, aren't going to make people believe your point.
Vontussegirl- while it may be a "gimmick" to you, it's really beautiful to others. I hate it when people go stating their opinions like they're facts. What ever happened to "I believe.." "I think...".

Great examples, WW11.
If that's all you saw in the production, then that is your problem. What I saw was a story told in a way that hasn't quite been done so before.
That is one of the most vague statements made on this thread.

Posted: 6/5/07 at 8:09pmjg- if you're referring to my post, would you like me to list every single play/musical I can think of that has done staging the likes of Spring Awakening, has rock/pop scores, and deals with the same issues as Spring Awakening?

Posted: 6/5/07 at 8:10pmWickedfan- what are you talking about? i never said there weren't any other shows like Spring Awakening. Nor did I say it was revolutionary.
#59re: Rosie says the 'Best Musical' Tony will go to...
Posted: 6/5/07 at 8:14pmI assumed when you stated that etc.'s weren't going to make a point you were referring to my post. Since no other posts used etc.'s recently. Would you LIKE me to list other shows to make my point? I'm not trying to get people to agree with me, they're going to believe what they want. That isn't going to stop me though from pointing out that people are completely disregarding decades of Broadway history in order for them to support Spring Awakening.

Posted: 6/5/07 at 8:16pmI've never really thought it was revolutionary. I just love the show for the show, which is why I don't comment on how I think it's brand new, all that stuff. My "etcs" were directed towards JV freaking out at people, acting as though they've just argued with a proven fact.

Posted: 6/5/07 at 8:17pmMy post wasn't regarding your opinion, jg. I never stated that you opposed what I said. I was simply asking if you would like me to elaborate to make my point. A simple "no" would've sufficed.

Posted: 6/5/07 at 8:18pmOh well, since my post was never directed towards you I didn't see why you wanted to give me your list.
#63re: Rosie says the 'Best Musical' Tony will go to...
Posted: 6/5/07 at 8:21pmjg-stop, think, re-read. In my original post, I stated that I thought your post was directed to me. That's why I asked if you wanted me to elaborate. You went on with "I never said it was revolutionary!" I continued to say "I never said you did. I asked if you would like me to elaborate on my etc.'s", then you went "well, it was for jv. i never said it was revolutionary" and then I went, "again, thats not what i care about". But back to the original issue-I originally thought your post was directed at me. Hence my post. Got it?

So what people can't like something for not being the typical Broadway norm? I've seen Spring Awakening once before it transfered and once on Broadway. While I don't think it's on the level of many great shows I do think it presents something that Broadway hasn't really seen before..A show that talks about the struggles of teens in a world that is repressive. I think the show overall is pretty good and I do agree the lyrics are always winners I'd rather have someone break into song expressing what cannot be expressed versus singing to chew time.
Why is it everyone loses sight that people are entitled to his/her own opinions? Sure, let's debate but why swallow a thread in bickering?

Posted: 6/5/07 at 8:23pmsorry wickedfan- i choose to ignore your list offer in the first post, and then you asked me again, so I thought I'd let you know I didn't want it. My post wasn't directed towards you, but I was commenting on what you wrote in your first post without stating that.

Beautiful or not, the score is gimmicky.
At least, that's what I beliee. But you know, my opinion must not mean as much as those hordes of SA fans. I just must not be able to appreciate true, emotional, groundbreaking art.

Posted: 6/5/07 at 8:29pmWow, I don't think anyone ever said that either. You can have your opinion, I just said you were stating it like a fact. What do you think is "gimmicky" about it? The pop factor? I really want to know, too, cause I can't quite wrap my head around it. If you mean belonging to a specific genre and targeted towards a specific age group, then sure, it's "gimmicky".

i so hope rosie is right!!! spring awakening should get best musical and if there is any justice at all it will. if any other show gets it instead then there is something seriously wrong with the tonys. but as another poster mentioned spamalot and contact never should have gotten it either.
spring awakening is a truly innovative show. the performers are all wonderful, most especially jonathan groff, john gallagher jr and lea michele.
they deserve best musical.

Spring Awakening is not groundbreaking, moving or an example of great art. And yes, the lyrics are about as hokey as they get.
But it's STILL the best new musical of the season. So, yes, it deserves to win.

jv with all due respect for your opinion:
"Spring Awakening has lousy music and terrible lyrics that ignore the craft and traditon of the past."
The lousy and terrible is all personal opinion but how the **** does it "ignore the craft and tradition of the past" (and for that matter why should that be a strike against it especially given the lame scores we've had that have been hommages to the past, recently.
I dunno--I LOVE the SA score, and part of the reason maybe is it's not typical Broadway stuff (on the other hand I don't praise it for being new or groundbreaking--it isn't and so what). I also love Kander and Ebb, worship Sondheim--oh and also listen to a lot of Tchaikovsky, own every single Donna Summer album, love a few trance DJs, am a big fan of Bacharach's 60s work... I don't get the feeling that some on here have that if you love SA's score you're somehow lettin g down theatrical traditions, etc.
Don't like the show? Fine--but don't pretend it's for a greater reason or for the good of Broadway.

Mayer couldn't direct if his life depended on it. MILLIE stands as proof. And he didn't improve with SPRING AWAKENING.
Sheik's music can be beautiful, but Sater's lyrics need a LOT of work.
And the choreography nomination is laughable. Since when is simulating a seizure and wildly jumping up and down choreography?
I think GREY GARDENS is superior in every arena. And now that Ebersole is touring with GREY GARDENS, those touring producers would be mighty happy to have "TONY WINNING BEST MUSICAL starring TONY WINNING BEST ACTRESS" sprawled across their marquee.
Greif's direction is superb.
The thing I love the most is how people are referring to SA's winning as if it's total fact. Like it's already happened.
I'm not naive enough to say it has no chance. But, I'm also not presumptuous enough to state my opinion as if it's fact.
MARY POPPINS has a VERY good chance to upset.
And, if it does, I'll giggle to myself and it shall be wonderful fun.

I don't understand how Spring Awakening's score is all that revolutionary. One or two songs at most sound SLIGHTLY different than what I've heard coming out of a Broadway theatre (mainly "B*tch of Living").
But the majority of this "breakthrough" score sounds like a rehash of "Godspell."
Not exactly NEW if it sounds like something written over 30 years ago. I actually like the music, but it's NOT new to Broadway or musical theatre.

"I lost all hope in the Tony Awards when CONTACT won Best Musical.
Brilliant show? Yes.
Best Musical? No."
And we all know what should've won that year.
