Unfortunately? SPRING AWAKENING truly is the best musical of the season, if not for many years. GREY GARDENS is also worthy, however I would give the trophy to SPRING AWAKENING in a heartbeat due to its brilliant execution of unique, original storytelling.
PS: When is Rosie ever wrong?

Posted: 6/5/07 at 6:08pmSpring Awakening as lousy music and terrible lyrics that ignore the craft and traditon of the past. The book isn't anything to write home about. I didn't find the direction special, thought it was good. The cast showed some talent. The lighting was interesting. So I'm going to repeat myself, unfortunately she is correct.

You didn't lose hope when Spamalot won??
I personally feel Spring Awakening is a lousy show with great music.

Could you explain why that makes it a bad musical? Since when does going against the grain constitute bad art?

Well, jv92, in my opinion you are sorrily mistaken. But that's your opinion and my own. I think the music (and lyrics) beautifully blends with the emotions of the characters and perfectly directly & indirectly bridges with their situations.
The lighting is much more than interesting. It provides the perfect atmosphere that enhances the set all too well.
The cast is extremely talented and have added a wonderful mixture of period characters with contemporary attitudes (thanks to the wonderful script and direction).
And speaking of the direction...I'll let Michael Mayer's Tony win speak for itself.

Re- Gavin Lee winning
Gavin Lee? Are you crazy? He was entertaining and quite good, but with competition from Raul Esparza and Michael Cerveris and David Hyde Pierce??? He doesn't stand a chance my friend. Have you been to the theatre at all this season?

Posted: 6/5/07 at 6:17pmWell, guys, keep in mind though that she has pushed for Grey Gardens just as much as she has for Spring Awakening. On her video blogs, she talked about Ebersole and Wilson continuously. So, she's done equal promoting of both shows in my opinion.

Capn, he hasn't won yet.
And, for the record, I hate the lyrics of Spring Awakening. It's a shame they aren't up to par with Sheik's music.

I'll admit, the music is miles ahead of those stupid lyrics filled with slant rhymes. It still isn't good music though.
And yes, Rosie has given some support to Grey Gardens, but she should give a little more. Spring Awakening is doing better at the box office. Grey Gardens isn't. It could use a kind word or two from a celebrity.

I don't think SA really is that innovative. Nudity and foul language have been on the stage for ages, as has the coming of age story, including sex. As for the music, it's not that innovative. (Some tunes are catchy, I'll admit that. But, it's not, IMO, as groundbreaking as Rent was when it came out. I found it flat in spots and lacking in character development. As an audience member I had a hard time feeling much for the characters because they weren't developed.) 'Nuf said: Rosie has promoted GG to the hills, as well as SA. I must say I'm a little disappointed she's not planting a little more faith in GG. However, she's being realistic; perhaps her pick personally would have been GG, but she believes it will go to SA.

"And yes, Rosie has given some support to Grey Gardens, but she should give a little more."
Is it Rosie's responsibilty to make sure every show does well at the box office? She is allowed to give support to whichever show she chooses. She doesn't sit down and say, "Hm, this show is doing badly at the box office. I'll rave about this today!" Besides, she doesn't have The View anymore to get the names out there. She mentioned numerous shows, getting the Broadway names back out there. While she is great for doing that, it's not her duty to give support to a certain show.

Posted: 6/5/07 at 6:30pmNot it isn't her responsibility, but she should say something about it. Ebersole is one of her good friends.
