^FYI, it was KJisgroovy who made the original bootlicking comment. Unsure why Kad is the one being ridiculed.

I fail to see how it is a bad thing. They rent out their spaces as a source of income. Direly needed income. Roundabout would love to continually support their own productions in both Studio 54 and Todd Haimes theaters, but fundraising at this level to produce this much broadway content has been difficult for some time. It's gotten exponentially worse in the last couple years. Being a Broadway landlord also means they get to be one more voice who can decide WHAT is produced on Broadway. Would you rather the Nederlanders or Shuberts have two more theaters and continue to have even more of a stranglehold over what kind of art gets produced?

Non Profits all across the country are struggling. Subscriptions have cratered. Fundraising has waned. Government grants have evaporated. People are going out less, and certainly not buying tickets in advance. But sure, let's force them to give up one of their only reliable sources of income (well...not so reliable during those years in the pandemic when rent wasnt being paid, was it?). Gimme a break.

Yes, I would rather see these theaters in corporate hands than a non-profit that gets tax breaks if the productions in them are going to be commercial anyway. If they're going to be landlords and not producerstake away their tax exemption.
"

Not to respark this conversation but the Shubert's are also a non-profit. They get different benefits as a private foundation but they are still getting tax benefits. Do people feel they also need their theaters taken from them and sold?

If memory serves me, I think the reference is to "Plato's Retreat". Unless there's another orgy pit. It was the 70's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plato's_Retreat

I'm referencing something Peter Shapiro wrote about in "Turn the Beat Around," though it might have been a different club: in the back, behind the private rooms, was an orgy pit. Flat concrete on all sides, painted black, totally unlit but with haystacks all over the place, people would slip into pitch blackness and screw with anyone or anything they could touch..

Based on my quick Google AI summary of the Shubert Foundation and Corporation, it seems like the Shuberts donate all the profits to non-profits.  If that is the case, then I am ok with the Foundation being classified as a non-profit.  As long as Roundabout is reinvesting their income into theater, then I guess what they are doing is ok.
