Out of curiosity, who was the last female playwright to have a play produced on Broadway? Was it Suzan-Lori Parks' TOPDOG/UNDERDOG? Or am I way off-base here?

Now that I think of it, there was Byrony Lavery's extraordinary FROZEN at Circle in the Square back in... 2000? 2001?

Um...Yasmina Reza, author of God of Carnage. re: Ruhl's IN THE NEXT ROOM to Play The Lyceum

Frozen was 2004, by the way.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Reza also has Life x 3 at Circle in the Square in 2003. There was also Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphosis in 2002 and Theresa Rebeck's Mauritius.

Broadway has made great strides in including female playwrights (and lyricists and directors) in the past decade, but we're still far from where we should be. That said, I really cannot stomach Ruhl's plays and would much rather see LCT produce something by Anne Washburn or Lynn Nottage on Broadway.

Ah, yes, I didn't get to see METAMORPHOSIS sadly. But I enjoyed MAURITIUS. I love Ruhl, but some Nottage would be nice on the Great White Way.

There was also Lisa Kron's Well.

Laura Benanti would be a very interesting casting choice. I wonder which role she would play--there are two feasible roles she could play; one would be the sexually repressed patient, Mrs. Daldry or the distressed house wife, Mrs. Givings.

I believe Benanti is playing Mrs. Daldry.

Mrs. Givings would be cast slightly older, no?

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Yeah, the comedy is that Mrs. Givings is a (somewhat) older woman who has her (first?) orgasm at the end of the first act after she sneaks into her husband's office.

Laura as Mrs. Daldry is actually...pretty wonderful.

From what I gathered, Mrs. Givings and Mrs. Daldry were relatively close in age, though of course, Mrs. Givings was a bit older. With that being said, the role of Mrs. Daldry would be a great fit for Benanti.
