Okay regarding Nicole Kidman --
The debacle regarding EUCALYPTUS was between Crowe and the producers. Kidman was a casualty of the arguement because she had a very small window available to make the film. Her main reason for signing on was indeed to work with Crowe, and I don't think their relationship was tarnished by the situation.
I have only briefly heard Kidman's name floated for SWEENEY TODD -- and that has been for The Beggar Woman -- not Mrs. Lovett.
The Beggar Woman is a smaller role, but in truth a fantastic role and one better suited to Kidmans's (sizable) talents as an actress who does sing but not like Streep or Collete or some of the other women mentioned for this film.
I too expect Meryl Streep to play Dear Nellie.

Kidman as Mrs. Lovett???? I'll pass....she just wants to get "ugly" so she can get another Academy Award.....
Let's put her as Johanna to let Musical Theater Talents really shine!!!!!
In other news.....I'm all about Streep!!!!! She's my favorite actress in the world!!!!!!!!!!! However, let's consider Imelda Staunton too!!!!!!!!!!

Please let some casting director for this film see this! He would be great. You know it. Cast him!
Actually I think Liv Tyler should be Toby and Ben Aflack should be Sweeney.

Let's take into consideration that Ewen Mcgregor had never sung before Moulin Rouge. He went into trainging, and look at what a masterpiece of a voice came out of that! I've played the role of Sweeney Todd and personally, I think the man is slated out just right for the role. And with some vocal training, he could be pulled together to make one awesome demon barber. I personally, am blown away at the fact that he would say yes to such an idea. But, in all honesty, I think he could really surprise a lot of people. Also, I'm crossing my fingers for Toni Collette in the role of Mrs. Lovett. She'd be absolutely perfect.

Tracy Ullman is the only choice for Mrs. Lovitt. Oh well. No one asked me.

No, she's not. There are 3-4 woman being considered for the role and Toni Collette is one of them.

FinishingtheHat...you were referring to Russell Crowe in your previous post, right? Because the thought of Ewan McGregor as Sweeney makes me consider self-immolation.

Man, if this were made in about 10 years then Ewan might be perfect for Sweeney. I guess for now he's too old for Anthony.

The whole thing with Eucalyptus cost Nicole the chance of being in The Producers. But as soon as Eucalyptus was delayed, she jumped on board the nearest film with an opening for her. Crowe might be picky over a script and demand quality, but certainly not Nicole.

Amanda -- Nicole is picky about what films she does. She just happens to get 90 percent of the best scripts in Hollywood offered to her first.

I want very badly to see Meryl play Mrs. Lovett, but would the ages work with her and Crowe if they were both cast?

Why not. Meryl looks probably 8 years younger than her age.

Jennifer Saunders would be PERFECT for the Beggar Woman...and Joanna Lumley would be PERFECT for Mrs. Lovett!!!
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive.
"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

How about Julie Walters as Mrs Lovett? Russell Crowe also appeared (briefly) as one of the leads in the Australian presentation of the British musical The Blues Brothers Show.He was fired after four shows for non appearance (don't ask).

I guess this leaves out Hugh Jackman...

Remember how it felt when a smoky voice comforted Roxie in the Chicago movie and a quick jump cut showed us Chita sitting beside her?
Imagine how it would feel when Len Cariou and George Hearn take their seats in Sweeney's barber chair...

I would also hope that Lansbury makes a cameo in there as well.

Same here, even though I'm not sure where it would go. I associate Sweeney with Lansbury first of all.

In regards to a possible Crowe and Streep pairing:
This could be fabulous. There is nothing that indicates that Mrs. Lovett must be the same age as Sweeney. It could easily be an older woman (not that Streep is even that old). After all, she is the one who pines after Sweeney and dreams up their life together. I say Streep all the way to another Oscar.
PS. I love the idea of a child as Tobias.

I've just been skimming this thread, but my favorite suggestion right now is Collette.

I think that Toni Collette is absolutely perfect. When you look at her next to Russel Crowe, they pair up incredibly, and the fact that Toni has had quite the experience in both film and on stage. The first time I ever witnessed her in film was in "The Sixth Sense" (which I think is an outstanding movie) and ever since I've been in just complete shock from her performance. Especially when I saw her in "behind the scenes" and she was so different from the character she potrayed in Sixth Sense (Cole's Mom). It really showed me how steap of an actress she was and she can put herself in any role. Her performances always seek to amaze me and there is no one I'd rather see in the role. As for Crowe, I don't think he's a bad idea. And my comments that I made about Ewan Mcgregor were that if Ewen can be trained so well (for a guy whos never sang before) for a movie like Moulin Rouge, then I'm sure Crowe has the potential to be trained for Sweeney Todd. Like I said, I've played the role and I learned quickly that it wasn't as much about the singing as it was the acting. It never really is. So as long as he has a decent voice and as long as he is one killer actor in the role, I think his physicality is perfection. I have a feeling that Neil Patrick Harris might be called in for Anthony. I think he might do that well. As far as the rest of the cast, I'd have to give it a lot of thought. You can't just cast people like Julia Roberts in a movie like Sweeney Todd. They really need to be triple threat and be able to fofill the taste in theater goers and film fiends alike.

Well, I understand your point, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that Ewan MacGregor can actually SING. He pulled it off on a recorded soundtrack - it was definitely touched up.

I went back and read through some past comments. You know, I wouldn't mind seeing someone like Nathan Lane as the Beatle. And possibly John Lithgow as the Judge. He's quite well known among both communities (film/theater). And how about Vern Troyer (from austin powers) as Tobias? (JOKE!!!)
