#1SA 13 year old question?

My cousins are coming up to NYC and I really want them to see SA. But my one cousin is 13 do you guys think she's too young for SA. I'm thinking tho bc she's 13 she's probably heard a lot of language being in middle school and all.
What do u guys think?
I mean the way I'm thinking is thats its not TOO bad of a show. I mean the first time I saw it I thought it was going to be MUCH Worse content wise than it actually was.

If your cousin can sit through a PG-13 movie, she can surely sit through SA without a hesisation.
Enjoy! =]

Posted: 6/11/08 at 8:51pmClumsy, I don't know what PG-13 movies you've seen but Spring Awakening is rated R, I'd talk to the parents or something about how they feel about their 13 year old child seeing a musical with involved nude scenes.

Shhhh, It's really not all that bad.
I could understand if you saw more than boobs and butt.
But, seriously, the only graphic nature in the show is language.

Posted: 6/11/08 at 8:59pmI saw it off-Broadway when I was 13. It really is no big deal. She already knows everything. She's in middle school for Christ's sake! In my middle school, it was common place to catch people having sex in the restroom stalls.

Clumsydude - it's clearly borderline rated R.
nudity, explicit sexual material, and there is depiction of violence (to some extent).
#9re: SA 13 year old question?
Posted: 6/11/08 at 10:05pmI saw it at 13. If your cousin is mature it should be completly fine. The nudity/sex is very brief and not to explcit.

Posted: 6/11/08 at 10:09pmI'd probably feel way too uncomfortable seeing SA at 13, but maybe it's just me. And yes, I definitely think SA is R as well.

Posted: 6/11/08 at 10:37pmIt's nothing we didn't know about at that age. Masturbation, Brief Sex, References to Abortion, Suicide, Sexual Abuse, all that good stuff. The language is pretty bad too, but I doubt any 13 year old wouldn't enjoy this. If you want to freak them out, ask the girl's parents.

It depends on the kid.
My sister and I took my 10 yr. old niece (completely by accident--bad mom and bad aunt didn't bother to learn about the parental advisories. *blush*). She absolutely loved it and we talked about it after the show to see if she had questions about what she saw. She was so non-plussed by it I was actually a little worried about what she's actually seeing in her school that has made her this way. XD
Thirteen is a good age if the kid is fairly worldly, but definitely ask the parents. You can also prepare them in advance by watching some of the youtube videos of the show, and reading the Wikipedia summary of the show with them.

Posted: 6/11/08 at 11:36pmAt this day in age a 13 year old has probably done most of the things in Spring Awakening. I'm sure it's perfectly fine.

Cages or wings? Which do you prefer? Ask the birds. Fear or love, baby? Don't say the answer Actions speak louder than words. (Tick, Tick... BOOM!)

Hm...not as bad as some of the stuff that I've seen on a movie screen, but this is live and the actors are physically there doing those things in front of you even if it is simulated. It makes it more intense I guess, and maybe a little more awkward. If you think the kid is gonna be fine after watching it, then ok.

Heck it has been a good 15 years since I was 13, but IIRC 90% of kids in Grade 8 had mouths fouler then anything on 'Spring Awakening' and knew damn well about all the birds & bees/drinking stuff (may of not gotten any at all - but they did know well about it). I can only imagine todays 13 year olds with stuff like the internet et cetera (which just really wasn't around unless you where a university nerd) would be more savvy.
Still the responsibility should remain with the cousins parents. Explain the show to them, the good and bad and let them decide.
