Yes, it has been discussed. But just to update you, if I recall. Most members were appalled. Others were syaing "don't knock it yet". I personally don't care for a musicalization of the movie and would like to see more originality on Broadway these days (straying away from juke box musicals and big named movie adaptations wouldn't hurt). But, who knows? It could be good.

It would be AMAZING to see something ACTUALLY origional on Bway. I'm not saying this is going to be origional if anyone thinks that.

I think a Shrek musical is ridiculous...and not in a good way.

Seriously, I'd love to see some original broadway shows instead of all these movies-to-musicals. And Shrek???? Love the movie to death but a broadway musical? If they ever made a musical it belongs at an small stage in Disneyland not on Broadway.
I wanted to get something that an "ex"-junkie like him would really appreciate and cherish....it's a brick of heroin shaped like a heart. -Scrubs

o dear i realllllly couldnt see this working, why cant commercialised crap, thats great on screen STAY AWAY from the stage!

God this uprise in awful commercialism towards musicals, like all the stars going "ah that was a cool film lets make it into a musical" or "i know how to get famous again...lets go into musicals...or at least lets make a film out of a cult classic" or "lets turn a great musical...commercial..so commercial that its performed at ameteur dance festivals all over the globe!...and make everyone sick of it"...(the last one was aimed at Chicago)...grr sorry...rant over.x

I'm not convinced this is a great idea. Maybe I'm a bit short-sighted, but I just don't see how this could translate well to the stage, espcially given that much dialogue will have to be cut in order to include musical numbers. Unlike Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King, most of Shrek's charm was actually in the animation of the characters and I think humanizing them as actors in costumes or with puppetry (thematically important in Avenue Q and culturally appropriate for The Lion King) could diminish what worked so well in the film. It would be nearly impossible to recreate the abundance of fairy tale and mother goose characters on stage without a cast of thousands and a monstrous budget that would take decades to recoup. I wonder how they plan to portray the Gingerbread Man, the dragon, Donkey and the vertically-challenged King to effect.

I keep wondering why he goes from movie musicalization to movie musicalization. Granted, so far he's been one of the few people I'll see a movie musicalization from, but after Full Monty and DRS isn't Shrek a step in the... well, less respectable direction?

(Although profitable for him, I'd assume)

I think we need to get the cartoon image out of our heads. Think of this production as uniquely different (yet similar to the movie) costumes (a la Lion King, without the puppets and in a different style). Think of a regular medival set design.

I think the STORY could be told better on stage. DON'T make it a full out comedy. DON'T include every fairy tale character. Keep it simple and tell the story. Lord Farquoi (sp?) could be evil without the John Lithgow humour.

Well, I just can't see it. I'm not going to knock it, but it's definitely not playing in my mind....hopefully someone sees it and makes it something good!

I'm probably one of the very few people in the world who hate this movie. I don't have any idea why, but I loathe it.

And I'm not all that keen on a musical version either... if you ask me, the producers just want an excuse to paint someone else green.

Such an outcry for original musicals over movie adaptations, but there are so few genuinely original musicals, even in the Golden Age. Sure, every couple of years, you have a true original like Brigadoon, Finian's Rainbow, Bells Are Ringing, Anyone Can Whistle, A Chorus Line, Sunday in the Park, Urinetown or Avenue Q, but almost everything else sprang from pre-existing material. Is My Fair Lady any less of a work for having been based on a play, that later became a movie? Or The King & I (novel & movie)? The Light in the Piazza (novel and movie)? Wait and see - there are some talented people involved with Shrek. I wouldn't write it off yet.

Wow if Yazbek is composing this maybe it will be just as good as the score to DRS! And then it will win as many awards as DRS did! *clenches fists in anticipation*

Yes...but the most of those stories didn't have a visual aspect to them. The musical brought the story to life. With Shrek we already have such a strong visual and aural connection that we may be disappointed with anything that is too different. Of course, there are very many creative people out there, so who knows???? LOL

I hope it doesnt happen.. I mean, I love the movie to death but its bad enough their planning at least 3 sequels... Leave it at movie theaters.. Bway has enough movie musicals.
