And again, I ask, why is a movie any less of a valid basis for a musical than a play or novel? Does the fact that a musical is based on a movie instead of a hoity-toity book or play make it automatically beneath contempt?

I, for one, am very interested in how this plays out.

It's not exactly like the creative team is a bunch of hacks.
They know what they're doing.

I'm just entirely fed up with the lack of creativity and originality on Broadway right now. Wicked happens to be on of my favorite shows of all time, but even that wasn't a completely original idea.

There needs to be some new and refreshing ideas brought to the Great White Way.

Musical theatre is an adaptive artform.

It always has been and it always will be.

Completely original musicals have always been the excpetion, not the rule.

Personally, I don't care what the source material is - original or not - just that it's done well. Would I find it a bit disconcerting if every show playing on Broadway at some point is based from a movie - probably - but if so - so be it. Of course I love seeing material that is fresh and new and support it in whatever way I can. But I would never "bash" on in favor of the other. There are thousands of movie and book sequels - some great, some that suck. There are movies based off tv shows - some fun, some awful. There are remakes or re-invisioned updates of movies already made constantly filling our theaters - again - some done with a fresh spin and others that well... you know.

If this show is done as a musical, it needs to be way different than the movie and have different types of comedy. For example: A talking donkey will not be nearly as funny without the voice of Eddie Murphy or whoever did the voice. They need to have a lot of funny dialogue. In addition to having great dialogue, they're going to have to have fantastic music, otherwise, this production will fail.

if Dreamsworks wanted to have one of their animated movies made into a musical...why not Prince of Egypt?!?!

thats not the point. lol! jk you're right. I just love the idea of Prince of Egypt on stage rather than Shrek.

I see no reason why Shrek couldn't be terrific. I don't understand all these "I want something on Broadway that's ORIGINAL" complaints.For Shrek to work, it will have to have a completely new score, and an imaginative scenic and costume design, so to suggest that there's no creativity or originality needed to bring it to fruition is silly. And I defy anyone to come up with the titles of 10 1st rate musicals not based on SOMETHING.

Well, TECHNICALY, Company was based on pre-existing Furth plays. But since they were unpublished I guess it counts.

I'll post the same question Magruder did in a different way. What difference does it make where the source material is taken from? If every Broadway musical playing now was based on a book would the same people be complaining? Again - as with individuals, judge each work by it's own merit and not against others or genre. Oh how I remember the outcry on another message board about a film version of Chicago - and then who they cast! The HORRORS... and the very same people when the movie came out praised it up and down forgetting their own vitriolic responses earlier that year.

You know, i don't really think the argument should be about whether or not movie/novel adaptations for stage are unoriginal and, therefore, bad, but rather, whether the material from the movie/book is original, a good story, and enjoyable enough for the stage. Its fine to say that you don't think a certain movie would make for a good stage adaptation due to plotline, characters, or some other quality that doesn't lend to a stage adaptation, but don't condemn something purely because it's a previously done storyline.

I think it's a terrible idea. The only reason I would see this is if Yazbek def. does the score. I vow to see any show he does.
