"And when someone does try to come up with something new (Brooklyn, Taboo, etc) the same people who complain about lack of original ideas trash the shows..."
Exactly! First of all, there is no absolute guarantee that Shrek will make it to Broadway. Second, the musical could always be better or worse than the source material. You can't always base your judgement of the show on the source material. Haven't there been terrible movies made into wonderful shows?
Let me try to explain what I meant in the first place. I see nothing wrong with using movies, books etc. as source material. I am just saying that I would like to see something NEW on Broadway.
As for trashing new shows... I haven't seen "Brooklyn" YET, I plan on seeing it, and I loved "Taboo." The only trashing I have done is the trashing of the idea that there is even a possibility that Shrek will come to Broadway.
What about movies like Legally Blonde and Spiderman, which also have plans to come to Broadway? In my opinion, those may be better suited as movies, while a movie like Shrek may be a fun musical. Yet, I don't see everyone trashing those ideas.
what about the lion king? thats kinda predictable as well. i dont know many people who havent seen the disney move and i thought the show was pretty good. what i've heard of Shrek the musical is that it will be done with puppets. whatever i was listening to mentioned something like avenue Q.
