Emcee, I went to the 10pm show and about died laughing. I had a headache from the lack of oxygen, especially during the Mr Wilson/Tom sketch. Thanks for the excellent recommendation. Anthony was fabulous as usual. That was a plus.
Haha, that sounds awesome. Wish I could have seen that. I think it's a great idea to bring in Anthony/B.D. and the like, not only for the coolness factor but because it works so well being worked into the script - it gives them even more "real" circumstances to spoof in an already hilariously-accurate account of what goes on.
Maybe it'll be around next time I'm up there. Glad you guys enjoyed it. Emcee, hope you're feeling better!
Thanks, JAXCR.
My stomach was hurting from laughing so much, especially in the sketch with the guy who falls on the floor and breaks the chair. I don't even know why, but that's where I laughed the hardest!
I think it's a great idea, as well -- because they're relying so much on word of mouth -- and bringing in people like this will certainly help it. It was really funny to watch people get star-struck, because that's something that's so real to me.
I'm glad people who went last night had fun! PS, if anyone saw someone walking around in the theatre after coughing with a huge bottle of water, that was me. Delayed hello.
Awwwwwe, this sounds like it was amazing.

Oh, to see Anthony in spandex doing suave dance moves...
I really wanted to get out there. I probably would have driven from Chicago if I had been able to get a ticket and if I hadn't had to put my dog to sleep... As much as I love Anthony, I'd much rather be there for my dog.
awww, I'm sorry!
I wish photographs had been permitted. If I'm allowed to say this, the Medea bit would've been one for the archives!
It sounds like it was lots of fun. Thanks for filling us in!
I finally saw Sides Saturday night and nearly peed in my pants laughing.
I was taking a cab down from see Act 1 of Chitty and was making good time, but then the cab driver GOT LOST. Thankfully, he stopped the meter as he drove aimlessly around the Village, as the clock reached and passed 10:00. I finally got to the theater (after stopping the cab driver when he passed by it) at like 10:08. I felt HORRIBLE, I'm NEVER late to shows. I get in there and the girl at the desk says I'll have to wait for the break at the end of the first skit to go in, which was more than fine.
A few more people show up late and we're all standing out there waiting for the end of the first skit. She was listening on headphones to the stage manager or something and told us there was a high school drama club in there that was just cracking up.
So, I missed the first skit, Emcee or someone, could you fill me in on what happens?
But on to the actual show:
Every skit was hysterical; my face hurt from laughing so hard at the end. I was trying to think of my favorite skit, but just every one had its moments. I loved the one with crazy playwright (You have a wheelchair and a cane!) and the hip-hop Medea, especially the 2 freaked-out guy's reactions when they have to dance together. The one where the two actors are auditioning on camera for the soap opera was great- the knee pads were a great addition, it made it all the more absurd. Okay, I'm going to stop now before I summarize the entire show, but it was just hilarious the entire way through.
After the show, I had to go to the bathroom, so when I came out the cast was leaving. I spoke with the bald guy (can't find playbill- he played the father in the wheelchair, among others) and told him I loved it and was already recommending it to people. And I did, I was telling random people I met the next day to go see it, so now I'm telling y'all again: GO SEE IT!
'N Sync's "Pop" just came up on my iTunes and I started cracking up. I'm never going to hear this song again without thinking of sparkly silver togas.
There are lots of things I can't think of the same way anymore.
The first skit starts with an empty audition room, and everyone comes in. First is the bald guy, he signs the sheet and sits down. They all come in one at a time. Rodney's character in his Julliard shirt, showing it off, asking if that's he EQUITY sign-in sheet, the girl with the suitcase asking everyone if they have appointments or not, someone with a Yale t-shirt showing his off, too, etc. It's all about the stereotypes. They talk a bit, the girl with the headphones and the bald guy exchance post cards in a "yeah, I'm totally not seeing this, but I'll be nice" kind of way, and there are several awkward social moments, etc. They warm up, and then I guess you saw the actual auditions.
I was talking about it with some people last night after S04, and couldn't help cracking up just thinking about this stuff.
I was walking to class earlier and just randomly thought of the skit with the playwright and he's like "I have 2 words for you..." and he only gives one word, and the opening the window and licking the dust, and I lost it. I was walking across campus and just started cracking up so bad I had stop and catch my breath. Of course, I was by myself and all these people were looking at me like I was insane, but seriously, who needs Prozac when you've got this show?
I was sitting in theatre history and something made me think of the cane scene. I was trying so hard not to laugh.
I love Rodney's eyes when he plays the playwright. Mildly creepy, yet totally hysterical.
Ah, I know, his eyes were like crazy! And the voice is so hilarious- wasn't his name Ding or something like that? Seriously, Rodney needs to be on like Mad TV or something because he is so great.
I just thought of the part where the guy was auditioning for the Asian storekeeper and the two casting people were talking about how gross it is to work in a deli and he's like "Uh, I work in a deli" and they try and play it off (badly).
Ugh, this is when I wish live theater weren't so live, so I could tape it and watch it over and over again. I'm so bummed that I won't be able to get back and see it again! Wait *checks calender* maybe...hmmm. I'm trying to decide if it's worth the cost of explaining to my parents all the charges on my credit card for tickets. It's closing Oct. 28th, right? Hmmm...
I know, I bumping this again.
I just shilled Sides to this random guy I met in the elevator of my building. I was interviewing him for a column I'm writing and we started talking about New York and suddenly I'm telling him all about it and how it's perfect for him since he's a musical theater major, so if he's goes to the city before the end of October he has to see it. Good lord, I really should be getting payment for advertising at the rate I'm promoting this show, especially since I'm doing it at the expense of my own work!
Way to be!
The playwright's name is Ding Ding. He wrote "Ding Ding's Play."
I'm sitting at my computer in stitches just thinking about it. Good thing I'm alone.
At work today, someone was singing 'Circle of Life,' and couldn't understand why I burst into hysterics. The funny thing was, she went down the octave at the EXACT same time the girl does it in the show, which of course only made me laugh harder...

is it still playing? and are there matinees?
He's from Upper East Side of Asia. Hehe.
I love the part when they're dancing and the one guy goes and lays down behind the guy with the hurt back and tries to play it off when he gets caught.
"Oh, downstage?"
Yes, it's still open and I'm not sure about matinees, but they have 10pm shows.
