Eh...I wish I shared your enthusiasm towards the show. I wanted to love it, given that there were several moments that really showed the old-time Terrence McNally brilliance that has been missing from almost all of his recent work, but something about it just didn't work for me. Every time I started to care about a character, they were relegated to the sidelines so that a new character could be introduced. By the end of the play, there were too many characters to keep track of, and only about three or four of them were very interesting.
I will say that everyone in the ensemble is superb, and what McNally is conjecturing--asking (from a gay perspective) if gay marriage really is a good idea after all, rather than blind faith in the institution of marriage--is a thought-provoking new spin on the argument. I just don't think it's there yet.

*SPOILERS*
There's a bath house scene where most of the men appear in towels, but only Kelly AuCoin and Romain Fruge show it all, and only for about a minute. If I remember correctly, Pedro Pascal gets down to his underwear in a scene, but other than that, it's pretty tame.

Posted: 3/17/07 at 8:15pmIt sounds good, I enjoyed Mc Nally's Love! Valour! Compassion! and Kiss of the Spider Woman, then I got very bored when I saw Master Class. Is this play a lot like "Love!..."?

Much more like LOVE! than MASTER CLASS. My only problem with this show (and it's sort of a biggie) is that the majority of the characters are blatant stereotypes. I'd expect more from Terrence McNally in that respect.
But that aside, I honestly very much enjoyed the show and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone and everyone. I came away VERY moved by the piece. There is a lot in it about gay men's history in Manhattan, by which I was enthralled. And the actors turned in some fine performances. Don't miss this one.
