Billy Joel's "(s)He's Got A Way" sung by Bernadette Peters.
And "Being Alive" and "Not a Day goes By" also by her.

D you mean a song originally intended for one sex but sung by another?
Example: "Send in the Clowns" sung by a man.

Yes to She's Got A Way. She puts a beauty and poignancy into that song that was never there before.
I also love her rendition of Johanna from SWEENEY TODD.

McG does a fabulous rendition of By Strauss, a song that I was recently informed had up until then been a "male" song.

In that case, I've heard several males sing "Loving You", and it always sounded lovely.
Bernadette also does a killer version of "Not A Day Goes By". She's really into singing men's songs.

I love hearing women (who have talent) sing "Corner of the Sky"
...but PLEASE...only one at a time. That song is overused.

I really liked when Jason Graae did R&H's "Maria" in "A Grand Night for Singing." A completely different spin on the song.
I think Jules Styne also was a big fan of male vocalists doing "People."

I've heard tons of songs sung by the oposite sex on the show tune channel. umm... most I don't remember who sang them. I know Michael Ball sang "Memory" and that was... interesting. ummm... favorites include "More I Cannot Wish You", "Try To Remember", and "The Music of the Night" sung by women... pretty cool.

I liked Barbra Streisand's Music of the Night, and Michael Ball's Tell Me on a Sunday was absolutely incredible (don't know much about the original show though ... I'm pretty sure it was a first a female solo correct?).
I also heard a clip of Stephen Schwartz (I'm fairly sure) singing Defying Gravity. Wow! What a voice! The song was thrown up quite a number of steps and made it really high. And sadly the clip was horrible quality and wasn't the entire song.

Anthony Warlow's version of "Unexpected Song" from TELL ME ON A SUNDAY. It is the best version of it out there, especially because of the glory note at the end.

Ok. I hope someone can refresh my memory. There's that song from Follies... I can't remember the name... ugh... "Leave You" or something like that. A woman sings it to her husband when he thinks she won't leave him? Anyway, in the British cast of a Sondheim revue (Putting it Together) a male sings it... and he keeps the line about frolicking with a boy in the fields or something. God... where is my memory today. Anyway... it works fantastic.

I think the song is called "Could I Leave You" or something along those lines.
How about "Being Alive" from Company... another one Bernadette sings oh so well!!

I know it is not a theater song but bjorks version of leaving on a jet plane is just perfection.
"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell

The song "Bill" has brought me to climax so many times...especially Lonnette McKee's version. Must check that out. PS, love the avatar!
