Mary Martin used to tell the perhaps apocryphal story that, during rehearsals for the original play, the Oscar came down to the theater and handed her a slip of paper. They had been waiting for him to finish the intro to "Sixteen Going On Seventeen" and, despite his severe illness, he had managed to jot down, “A bell's not a bell 'til you ring it. A song's not a song 'til you sing it. Love in your heart wasn't put there to stay. Love isn't love 'til you give it away!”
That was the last time she saw him alive.
Now even if that's made up, it's great theater.......

There is an almost certainly apocryphal story that the Sound of Music was such a hot ticket that one night when Richard Rodgers spotted an empty seat in the house he rushed over to inquire how that could be- only to have the woman next to the seat explain that she & her husband had purchased the tickets many many months ago and that her husband had died since then. Rodgers was stunned and said 'well, certainly someone could have accompanied you to the theater- a friend or a relative perhaps?'
"Oh no," she explained, "they are all at his funeral."

Posted: 4/5/10 at 8:27pmPretty hard to beat the opening scenes of the movie - the scenery and Maria running up that hill. Good stuff. Never seen a stage version and I love the movie so much, probably never will.

allofmylife:
I too had heard that story, and as you said it's a great one even if perhaps stretched.
I have a very rare Disneyland LP record with a Disney-style booklet/jacket that features Mary Martin singing and telling the story of "The Sound of Music." It was made sometime in the mid-1960's. In it, she sings "A Bell is no Bell" on it's own. Obviously, the lyrics were very near and dear to her.
I find "Edelweiss" to be among the simplest, but most endearing songs to ever come out of musical theatre. R&H were very gifted men.

The Disneyland album is rare? I find those all the time here in Dallas.

Perhaps not. I haven't ever seen another, but then I don't go looking for them either.
As a matter of fact, I haven't seen mine in years... tucked away in a box somewhere. I'll have to dig it out someday.

Posted: 4/5/10 at 10:27pmMary Martin must have done a lot of those Disney albums. I remember having the "Sleeping Beauty" LP (yes, records) with her narrating and singing all the songs.

Originally, the play's first act was going to end with Maria leaving the villa, but R&H insisted that it ends with an inspirational number, sort of a "Face Life" song. I think it would have worked either way. Ending the first act with Maria's exit leaves the audience in suspense/wondering if she'll ever come back.
Check out the song "A Bell Is No Bell," reworked in the 1981 London Revival as a song between the Mother Abbess and Maria. I actually like it!

SOUND OF MUSIC is one of many movies that cannot be altered or edited in any way, shape or form even when it's shown on television. ABC Family inserts commercial breaks but cannot cut the film to make room for them. Why? Because it was selected for preservation and is now part of the Library of Congress' National Film Registry deeming it as well as other films included in the registry culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.
This also accounts for the 4 hour long running time.

Posted: 5/18/10 at 6:28pmGet a VHS or an early remaster- Popular Science just said that, since the green grass was literally painted green to make it look more lush, the effect is terribly obvious in Blu-Ray or HD transfers of the film, but it looks naturalistic on earler transfers.

The Kael quote:
"Wasn't there perhaps one little Von Trapp who didn't want to sing his head off, or who screamed that he wouldn't act out little glockenspiel routines for Papa's party guests, or who got nervous and threw up if he had to get on a stage?"

Posted: 5/18/10 at 6:34pmPauline Kael always struck me as an intensely miserable and frustrated woman. It clearly comes across in her writing.

Kael (like John Simon) was a sour hack with a talent for torturing words into sometimes interesting combinations. She, like Simon, was ridiculously subjective in an already ludicrously subjective job.
They both had/have their supporters, but produced nothing of benefit to anyone, and both will soon be almost totally forgotten.

Are you sure that's right? I'm just curious what that means for R-rated movies, or actually any movie that has anything in it that would be an FCC violation. Can those movies no longer be shown on broadcast tv?
