I saw SOUTH PACIFIC for the first time last night, and I really loved it.
But I hope Kelli is ok. Her voice sounded pretty strained. Especially on "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Outa My Hair" and "A Wonderful Guy." She was out of breath during those two numbers, and a lot of the higher notes were strained. I was worried she wouldn't make it through both numbers. Otherwise, I thought her acting was fantastic. I know she was out Tuesday, but I thought that was because of a previous engagement, and not because she was sick.
I also thought the staging of the scene and song "Younger Than Springtime" was incredible. Absolutely beautiful. YTS was going great, but then on the last "am I with you" - Matthew's voice cracked on the IIIIiiiIII. I know people have said he has trouble with the high notes, but everyone kind of chuckled and looked at each other when his voice cracked.
Victor Hawks was on for Billis, and he was quite good! I thought the rest of the cast, especially Paulo and Loretta were amazing!

JACK NICHOLSON was in the audience too.
And something has to be done to remined audience members to TURN OFF THEIR CELL PHONES OFF AFTER INTERMISSION! During the intense scene where the fate of Lt. Cable is announced (insert the annoying ring tone here).
CELL PHONE MAKERS....add 2 more buttons to the pad: TRANSPORATION MODE and THEATRE MODE!!!!

Hanna, I completely agree with you.

Happy to say that they are doing a second reminder at the end of intermission at Gypsy. However, when I first heard the "Voice of God" come on, I got scared because I thought somebody was being replaced halfway through. I'm not anti-understudy, but the one time it happened to me before it caused a very weird disconnect for me that made it harder to get back into the story. It was like I had to get to know the character all over again.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I'm seeing it this upcoming Wednesday, and I'm beyond excited!
As for the projections issue, I know it's been discussed a thousand times, but the projections in Sunday couldn't have been considered lighting because they were so much an integral part of the scenic design. Plus I don't know if the lighting designer had anything to do with the projections.
Anyway, from what I've seen the South Pacific set is breathtaking, and I'm sure I'll gasp even more when I see it.
And one question, is sitting in the far left orchestra (ROW M) a bad choice of seats?

Posted: 8/30/08 at 1:21pmNo, I was a little closer, but I think it should be fine.
