I don't think this album will replace either of the other two for me, though it's nice to have it preserved. I don't know if I'm just used to the vocal registers of previous actors in the roles, but I didn't really like the gender bent roles of Greaseball and CB. The lyrics to Whistle at Me also seem a bit cringe, and the integration of the hydrogen element feels somewhat clumsy. But I appreciate having a recorded version of I Do and I think Jade Marvin as Momma sounds fantastic
“Whistle at Me” is obvious someone on the creative team decided Pearl shouldn’t be longing for a train to whistle at her, and Rusty needed consent to whistle at Pearl. It’s not entirely successful but the lyric “whistling’s okay if it’s Pearl and Rusty” is cute. And it never really occurred to me before that there wasn’t a song setting up Pearl and Rusty as a couple until now.
Some odd choices made for this album too. One of Electra’s components still says “we ask the questions” even though that is supposed to be in response to “who is Electra?” but that line is cut on the album. And “The Race” track is the music for race three but Control says “heat one.” I guess technically it’s the first race on the album but it’s race three in the show. I can’t tell if these are intentional or this album was just rushed. I would have loved a complete live cast album of this like the Sunset Blvd. revival got.
